book? What is your favorite food? What is the farthest you have traveled from
home?
Respond to any of this to tell us about yourself.
My name is Brandon Hong. I am a Physics major here at CSUB. I have lived in Bakersfield most of my life. I spent my fair share of time attending Bakersfield College, and I was accepted to Cal Poly SLO as a Mechanical Engineering major. Somehow, which I'm sure everyone can relate to, life got in the way, and a job, a wife, and a son later I'm studying Physics here. Work is crazy right now, so I've had to resort to taking what little Gen. Ed. classes I have left online. I enjoy online classes, and I look forward to working with all of you.
ReplyDeleteHello Brandon! I can totally relate to you when you say that life got on the way because I also had to pause my education for family, and also did spend quite some time at BC; however, the best thing is that we are here and moving forward, so good luck and welcome to the class.
DeleteHi! Sounds like you have a lot going on. An online course seems like the perfect solution. I look forward to working with you as well!
DeleteHi Brandon!!
DeleteNice to meet you! I can definitely relate about life getting in the way. It's funny how that happens! Thanks god for online and evening classes! I wish you luck in this course and also in finishing your degree. Hard work pays off.

Hello, My name is Kazi Ahmed, and I am a Child and family development major. I've two kids, so online classes work as a surviving tool for me. I love to cook and spend time with my family. I love being around children and my goal is be a teacher. I am originally from Bangladesh; however, I moved here twenty years ago but somehow education was at the bottom of my list of many goals, however, as I am growing up and gaining wisdom I am realizing that education is the only key to life long success, so now after spending some time at Bakersfield college, finally I am at CSUB and need this class for graduation. I am very excited about this class because I had my share of struggle with English, so learning to write better gives me a great sense of accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteYes, online classes are great for parents! It works well around your schedule. What made you want to be a teacher?
DeleteHi Kazi,
DeleteIt's sounds like you have a pretty good understanding of how it is for me! My wife was the same major as you at CSUB, as well. She finished just a couple years ago. I hope you enjoy it.
Hi Kazi,
DeleteI am a psychology major but minoring in child, adolescent, and family studies. Any classes you suggest taking?
Hello Abby! I am just doing it the other way around my minor is psychology and major is CAFS. I really enjoyed CAFS 311 because that teaches you about infants and sooner or later we all need to learn how to handle infants, so yes that class was pretty informative.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Britt Bankston. I am from North Carolina, and I have lived in California for the past eleven years. I declared my major in Sociology, and a minor in Criminal Justice. My original major was Criminal Justice, my minor was in Sociology, but I decided that it was not the right fit for me. I choose Sociology over Criminal Justice because I am interested human interaction, and understanding human behavior. I decided to take this online course because it will help improve my GPA, help satisfy the GWAR requirements, and it will be easy to fit it around my work schedule. I prefer lecture courses opposed to online courses because I like to interact with the professor and classmates. I do not have a favorite book, however I am currently reading the novel Fifty Shades of Grey. My other hobbies include; playing basketball, watching sports, traveling, and enjoying outdoor activities. I recently began my employment with Chipotle. I love working somewhere that is clean, organic, and eco friendly. I have learned that a lot goes into the daily routine of making a Chipotle run, which was much more interesting than from a customer perspective. This will be my last year here at CSUB upon completion of all of my classes. After graduation, I hope to move out of California and return to the East Coast. There is truly a big difference in culture, people, and basic norms in society on the East Coast that I am eager to return to. I hope that through this class I improve my writing skills.
Hello Britt, I have always seemed to have an interest in Sociology also, but never perused my interest. What part of human behavior/ interaction is the most interesting for you?
DeleteHi Britt, I worked in a fast food chain earlier this year, and it does change your perspective of places being the worker rather than the customer. Also, I agree with you, there is an incredible difference between the culture here and the mid-west and east coast. I'm hoping to leave CA as well, but I'm looking to move to the Northwest US.
DeleteThanks for sharing.
Hello Britt! I have been working at a Taco Bell for almost five months now and I am amazed at all I can learn from the travelers that come to eat here. Some of my coworkers find it awkward that I take time to watch people, but it fascinates me. I think Sociology is an amazing field!!
DeleteHi Britt, that's so awesome that you are from North Carolina! I have family there and I love getting to visit them there. It's such a fun place.
DeleteHello Britt! I think it is so cool you are interested in human interaction and human behavior! I am a psychology student and I love social psychology! I am so interested in why we interact with each other the way we do, especially in a sexual manor that is my main interest! What have you liked about California the most?
DeleteHello All!
Delete@claudia What I love most is observing different interactions, seeing how different groups in society functions and trying to grasp a general or in depth understanding of why they do the things they do.
@Brandi I hope your move will be great! and thank you for sharing.
@Jeorgina I used to work at taco bell as well, and yes that is a great place to observe people!
@Hannah Yes there is so much to do and explore there, Im glad you enjoyed it. Have you gone to Duke Gardens an amazing place you should visit sometimes.
@Erika Cool main interest! I bet your research will never be dull! As far as California, I could probably tell yo more of what I didnt like than what I did. haha

ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Brandi, I was born in here in Bakersfield but lived in many different towns. I was raised in Taft, then moved to Hopkinsville, KY, then to Bakersfield. I moved to Orange County ten years ago, then decided I needed to go to school and applied to CSUB (since I have family in town). I am majoring in Philosophy with a Pre-Law concentration, hopefully I'll be attending Law School after Cal State. I chose to take an online class because it was available and I needed to take it to satisfy the GWAR requirement. My favorite book would have to be "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein, mainly because it's written from the perspective of a dog. The farthest I've ever traveled from home is to Parris Island, SC for Marine Corps basic training, it was a fantastic experience looking back, however, in the moment, I remember it sucked. I just moved back to Bakersfield two weeks ago, I have two dogs (doxie-scottish terriers), and I am currently not working. I enjoy reading, hiking, bike riding, rollerblading, and relaxing. I, like some of the other students, am excited for this class so that I may improve my writing. I often times think I write better than I actually do, which isn't a good thing. I look forward to working with everyone and meeting you at the class meeting in October.
ReplyDeleteHi Brandi, So you were in the Marine Corps? How much time did you do in the military? I have a daughter that just enlisted into the Navy, she seems to enjoy it thus far. Well, welcome back to bakersfield.
DeleteHello Claudia, I actually didn't stay in too long, only about a year. There were eight of us who all got "kicked out" for lack of a better term, all by the same person.
DeleteI have a cousin in the Navy, she is stationed in Japan right now. Thank you for being welcoming, and good luck to your daughter.
Hello all,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Claudia Trevizo. I am originally from San Diego and have lived in Bakersfield for about 14 years now. My major is Business with a minor in Accounting. I decided to take this course because I have always needed extra work in english. Spanish is my first language and learning how to write properly along with improving my writing abilities has been something I wanted to continue learning more of. The class also satisfies the GWAR requirements which is a plus. Currently, I work out of home, have a family which demand a lot out of me so the on- line availability for class works great. I love to read bibliographies of random people, I find that people are intriguing. I enjoy being a cheerleader for my children and their sports. I have a daughter that graduated from high school last spring and a son who is a sophomore in high school now. My daughter decided that she wanted to explore her independence so enlisted in the Navy, she just graduated from boot camp and is now going to Florida for what they call "A" school. My son runs cross country and also plays baseball. We only have two kids but I am crazy about them. I have not traveled much but with my daughters boot camp graduation, I got to travel to Great Lakes Illinois, which has been the farthest I have ever traveled. While we were there in Great Lakes we did get to visit downtown Chicago. While in Chicago we took our son to Wrigley field since he plays baseball and took a tour at the Willis Tower formally known as the Sears Tower. I hope to finish my education this year and hope to explore the work force again. It has been about 5 years out of the work force, but have been running a small business that keeps me busy. I look forward to improving my writing abilities with this class and look forward to reading all about you guys as well.
Hello Claudia, it was interesting to read your biography; I too enjoy reading about others lives and their experiences because it reminds me about how we are all alike yet have our differences. I think it is great that your daughter is in the navy, I myself don't feel I'd make it, please thank her from my part and I also admire the bravery. I hope you enjoy Bakersfield as much as you enjoyed San Diego most people I meet don't like Bakersfield and prefer to move back to their city or state, so I really hope Bakersfield has been a great experience. I really wish you all the best in this class and this quarter.
DeleteThank you Nancy,
DeleteGlad you enjoyed reading a bit about myself. I do enjoy living in Bakersfield, and suprisingly enough I like it better than living in San Diego and do not wish to move back. I am also very proud of my daughter to have made such a grown up decision to join the military and it was all her idea, for she did have other options. There was a few colleges that offered her softball scholarships to play for them but she decided to turn them down to serve for the military. Thank you for the patriotic support it is much appreciated.
Hello Claudia, While I was reading your blog I became really interested when you wrote that you lived in San Diego. I have never been there before, and I heard it is beautiful. What part of San Diego are you from? My brother joined the ARMY when he graduated from high school as well and he has traveled so much. I think your daughter is very independent reason being Florida is really far, and I honestly could not leave my family. My son has recently told me that he wants to join football and baseball. I am really looking forward to watching him play. Enjoy your time at home and not having to work. However, being a stay at home mom is much more work than being at work but it is rewarding. Hope your classes go great for you!
DeleteHello Arianna,
DeleteThank you for introducing yourself. When I lived in San Diego, I lived in the South Bay area. Yes the weather is nice, but the overwhelming amount of people everywhere you go including on the road was something I did not like. Cheering your children/child on a sporting event is the best. I loved it and am sure you will love it as well. I am a stay at home mom but also work a lot running my business and going to school. I do try and make the best of my time since I don't have to technically check in with anyone. I hope things go well with my classes also. I have two accounting classes at CSUB along with this on-line class so I have my fingers crossed that it all works out. Thank you.
Fabulous posts and responses so far, everybody! I'm already getting a sense of what great writers and cool people you are! And what a wide array of experiences!
ReplyDeleteHello everyone,
ReplyDeletemy name is Nancy Reyes. I was born and raised here in Bakersfield and love this city very much. Most of my family live here (a few live farther away in Guadalajara, Mexico). I am a family girl, we have family gatherings about every week. About a year ago my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and I am happy to report that the cancer is now gone and she is recovering from that tragic incident. Although it was scary I feel this brought us closer together. I am currently a senior at CSUB, and hopefully if all goes well I will be graduating in the Spring 2013. I am majoring in Liberal Studies hoping to one day become an elementary school teacher and later maybe even a college professor. I am taking this online course honestly because I love to work at my own pace and I feel that online courses let you work at your own pace; also because I like my schedule now with Fridays off. My favorite books are Dr. Seuss children's books, Limeny Snickets "A Series of Unfortunate Events", Cecily von Ziegesar "Gossip Girl" and finally Wilson Rawls "Where the Red Fern Grows"; I am an animal lover so that story really touched my heart. The farthest I have traveled is to Hawaii with my father, mother, and sister for my fifteenth birthday; I got to swim with the dolphins and learned how to scuba dive it was a great experience that I don't feel I'll ever forget. Finally my favorite food is a tough question because I love many foods, but if I had to choose I'd say orange chicken from Panda Express. I look forward to this entire quarter and getting to know my fellow classmates more through their blogs. Hope everyone has a great night, Nancy.

DeleteHello Nancy, nice to have read your blog. I was extremely happy to hear your mom has recovered fully and is healthy. Also, I love orange chicken from Panda Express too.
DeleteHello Nancy, I am very glad to hear that your mother does not have cancer anymore. Not everyone is as lucky as she is, your family is very blessed. I know what it is like to have a family member be diagnosed with cancer and it is very painful for everyone. i hope that you do well in the class.
DeleteAndrea, I think it is cool we both share a love for orange chicken. Also Natalie thank you for your best wishes I hope you do well in the class as well. This also goes to Andrea and all my fellow classmates.
DeleteHello Nancy! It was great to read that you're a family girl because I strongly believe in family, and think that no matter what one should always stand beside the family. It was wonderful to read about your mom's recovery, so bravo to her! Welcome to the class.
DeleteMy family is also from Guadalajara. Did you choose to go to Hawaii instead of a quinceanera, because if you did that is one of the smartest things you could of done.
DeleteHi Nancy! I'm also a Liberal Studies major, and hope to teach kindergarten or first grade. And I love Gossip Girl!
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Celina Ramos, I was born and raised in Bakersfield. Majority of my family live here in Bakersfield and I am blessed to have such a large and loving family who support and inspire me to fulfill my goals in life. I am a Psychology major and double minoring in Sociology and Child Adolescent Family Studies. I am taking this online course because I also work full time at a small restaurant here in town. I decided this quarter to try and take only online courses and see how it works out. Last year I took a quarter off after the loss of my grandfather, so I've been slowly but surely getting in the swing of things again with managing school and work. I think online courses are a good solution for making my way back into my studies. I really don't have a favorite food. I mentioned before that I work in a restaurant so when ever our cooks want to try new recipes, I always volunteer to be the guinea pig and try it out. I am always willing to try new things and different kinds of food, which is why I like to travel and experience new things. The farthest I have traveled to would be Washington D.C. and seeing the many famous landmarks such as The Capital Building, The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument, and of course The White House just to name a few. I hope to do a lot more traveling in my future.
I am excited for this quarter and this course! I can't wait to read and learn more about my classmates!
There's one positive note why I considered working in the food industry. I'd volunteer to always be the guinea pig!!
DeleteI love to eat and I am truly my Mother's guinea pig!
DeleteHi Celina! I am also a psychology major, what is your area of interest? and what restaurant do you work at? I also work at a home town restaurant, Jake's Tex-Mex Cafe. And I also have loss my grandfather in 2007 which was a huge part of my life, and I can understand where you are coming from!
DeleteHello my name is Andrea Valdez and I have been attending Cal State for four years now. I have lived in a little town called Earlimart my entire life (22 years). I graduated from Delano High school and went straight to CSUB. I am majoring in Kinesiology and hoping to be done by winter quarter. This summer was one of the most life changing and wonderful experiences that I have ever had. The reason being is that I became a mother to a beautiful baby girl in July 2012. Becoming a mother made me more mature then what I previously was. I do admit that I had mixed emotions about coming back to school this quarter due to being away from by daughter, but I am very close to finishing school that I do not want to put it on hold. Once I have my mind set to a goal I want to achieve that goal, school being one of them. Also, my fiance and I are getting married within a month so I am excited about that. Family is what matters the most to me. If I am not at home with my fiance and baby, then I am at my mother's house enjoying my family's company. There are activities that I love to do when I am free. Those activities are exercising and running. I am addicted to running, but for the past months it has become harder to get outdoors to run due to being a mother first. Right now I am looking around for a good jogging stroller for when my girl is old enough I can take her running with me. This is a little about me, I hope it was enough to get an idea of who I am. I am looking forward to this year and what the future holds. Goodluck to all my classmates, lets work hard this quarter so we all pass our classes.
ReplyDeleteHello Andrea! It was interesting to read your blog post because I attended Delano High School as well. Actually, I remember seeing you around school and I also had you for Child Psychology last quarter. I am a year younger than you are. I am glad that your baby was born. Babies are very adorable. Good luck with this class now that you are a new mother.
DeleteI couldn't agree more, running is so addicting one you get started. Well congratulations on your baby and i think you made the right decision by continuing with school since you are almost done anyways.
DeleteHello Andrea! Nice to meet you. I am due to have my baby in April. I can only imagine how tough it is to leave your little one to go to school everyday. I admire your dedication and hope that I will be as as driven to return to school after my baby is born.
DeleteTo my professor and classmates the blog post that says anonymous is mine. Sorry for not putting my actual name instead of anonymous. I believe it is the post right above this post. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am registered to run in this years volkslauf. I have no experience in running or cross training, and yet I am going to run this 10k course on a team of four. So if you have any tips for beginners on training methods they would be appreciated. I still have five weeks to get ready.
DeleteDrink a ton of water the days leading up to the race - That's my best advice. Good luck.
DeleteWILL DO!
DeleteHello Celina when did you travel to Washington D.C.? That must have been a wonderful experience, I have never traveled outside of California. Goodluck with taking online classes hope you pass them all.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Natalie Rivera and I am from a small town named Delano. I have been attending CSUB for 3 years now. I am majoring in Psychology and my minor is Criminal Justice. I hope to one day be a counselor for women and children who have been abused: sexually, emotionally, physically, or any other way possible. I want to be able to help those people and make a difference in their lives. The reason why I am taking an online course is because gas is not cheap. I live with my parents in Delano and must commute to school whenever I have class. It is much easier if I do not have to drive every day. I do not have a favorite book, but I do enjoy reading. I have read all the Harry Potter books and read each one in less than a week. I also do not have a favorite food. Just as I enjoy reading, I also enjoy eating. Actually, I love eating. I am not a picky eater and I will taste different foods. The farthest I have traveled is to New York. When I was a sophomore in high school, I joined a program called the National Hispanic Institute and I stayed in the University of Rochester for a whole week. I also got to go to Niagara Falls. It was very beautiful. I am looking forward to this class and I hope that it will help me improve my writing skills.
ReplyDeleteHello Natalie, first I have always wanted to visit New York and I think it is great you got to go your sophomore year in high school. Second I have to say I admire that you are going to work with women and children who have been sexually abused; I'm sure you will be a positive effect in their lives. I have a close friend who was sexually abused and it really has affected her a lot. It was very difficult for her to deal with the stress alone. Finally I too love to eat and I am always willing to try new foods as well. Hope you have a great quarter and wish you the best in this class and all your other classes. Nancy
DeleteHey Natalie, of course I remember you too from high school and Psychology class. Not going to lie, that Child Psychology class scared me when out professor showed us a women in labor. Hope you pass your classes this quarter.
DeleteHello my name is Tavon Ghashghai. I was born and raised in Bakersfield and I currently live in Sacramento. Most of my family lives in Bakersfield which makes it nice to have family close by. I graduated from Bakersfield High School in 2006. I received my AA in Liberal Arts from Bakersfield College and this is my first quarter at CSUB. I am a Sociology major with a concentration in Human Services. I love helping people in any way that I can. Helping others gives me a sense of peace in knowing that I can make a difference to someones life, even if it's a random person. Whether it's helping them with groceries or even just listening to them, to give a helping hand to someone is one of the joys in my life. My mother, who is a Social Worker, gave me the inspiration to become a Sociology major. Since I live in Sacramento, online classes are my best option and this class satisfies the GWAR requirement. I don't really read as often as I should but among the books I have read, I really enjoy self help books by the author Dr. Laura. The food of my choice would have to be pizza but I like anything greasy. The farthest I've traveled is Vancouver, Canada to visit my uncle for the first time. My father and I went to visit him, my aunt and my cousin. It was a really touching experience because I had never met him and I was curious to see what he was like. I look forward to taking class and learning new things.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is London Sarabia. I am 24 years old and have lived in Bakersfield most of my life. I started my college career at Bakersfield College and transferred to Cal State last fall. After many years of changing my major, I finally decided to be a Business major with a concentration in Marketing. I am taking this course to satisfy the GWAR requirement. I am currently a full time employee for Lightspeed Systems here in Bakersfield, and work as a Database Support Specialist. When I graduate I would like to join the marketing team at Lightspeed. Currently, I am reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. A few things that I enjoy are cooking, interior design, and running 5k races. The furthest that I have traveled is to New York to visit my Brother. I am the youngest of 4, and have three awesome older brothers.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading the previous posts, and look forward to meeting you all come October!
Hey everybody. Well my name is Jessica Flores and like many of you I am also from Bakersfield, California, but I just recently moved to Palmdale, California because of my husband's new job. Right now I am majoring in Accounting. I am taking this online course because I'm afraid I won't pass the GWAR writing test. I'm also pregnant with my second, and it helps to have one less class to go. My favorite book is Jane Eyre because the plot is really interesting. I also loved the movie version of Jane Eyre with Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska. My favorite food are pupusas which come from El Salvador which is where my parents are from. It's been nice learning all about you guys and I hope to meet you soon when I won't be pregnant anymore because my due date is on October 3rd.
ReplyDeleteHello Jessica, I have never had pupusas before. Sounds interesting!
DeleteBonjour tout le monde. My name is Grant Bingham. I am 21 years old and from Bakersfield - born and raised. I graduated from Centennial High School and started directly at CSUB. I am a French major and a Psychology minor. The reason I'm taking this class is so that I can finally "graduate" this quarter, but I will not be finished because I am also enrolled in the Credential program. I work full time and go to school full time as well. I've been lucky enough to travel all over Europe and have been lucky enough to live and study in France for little over a year. After I finish the Credential program, I imagine I will most likely teach French at a local high school. A favorite food is just too hard to choose..there's too many good ones out there. My favorite sports are Basketball (Mavericks), Football (USC), and Soccer (FCB).
ReplyDeleteBonjour! Vouz parlez française? I have not been able to practice my French in a long time so I am glad to hear you speak French. I hope to hear about your experience studying abroad. Nice meeting you! Au revoir!
Deletewow, Grant, you must have had some old professors who encouraged you to travel and see the world, yes? :)
DeleteGrant, I really enjoyed reading your post. A French major, how interesting the language is beautiful. I think that it is so exciting that you have traveled to Europe. I wish one day that I can be that lucky and get the opportunity. I understand what it is like to work full time and be a full time student, that's why this quarter I am trying online courses. Nice meeting you and good luck!
Delete@Dr. Schmoll: Yes! I had this one professor for a couple history courses who helped really push me to go abroad..and to know what I'm looking at when I traveled! ;)
Delete@Jeorgina: Nous pouvons parler en francais si tu veux!
Hi everyone, my name is Hannah Chudy. I've lived in Bakersfield my whole life. I live at home with my dad who coaches football and my mom who teaches 6th grade. I have two older brothers, one works in the oil industry, and one works in agriculture. I graduated from Centennial High School in 2010 and Bakersfield College this last May. This is my first year at CSUB and I'm really excited! I'm majoring in liberal studies, and hope to become a kindergarten or first grade teacher. I'm taking this class to fulfill some requirements. I currently work at an after school daycare program at an elementary school so I can get a better feel for working with children. I also coach volleyball for Bakersfield Volleyball Club during winter through spring. I love sports, I used to play volleyball and run track. My favorite book is The Hunger Games. My favorite food is anything that my dad barbecues. The furthest I've traveled was when I went to the South to see family. I went to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia and loved it. I'm hoping to travel all around Europe in a couple of years! My favorite things to do are crafting, baking, and shopping.
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm Jason Williams. No relation to the basketball player of the same name. I've lived in Bakersfield my entire life. I have no siblings, although my parents have two siblings each. I'm majoring in Computer Science. I'm not that fond of social networking, which is strange considering my major. Like many others, I am taking this class to satisfy the GWAR requirement. I enjoy reading far too much to narrow the list down to just one favorite. In fact, I don't think I could even narrow it down to a top five. Actually, I don't think think of anything in any kind of list as my favorite. The farthest from home I've been is a cruise in the Caribbean.
ReplyDeleteHi Jason! Great choice in choosing Computer Science. Both my brother and my boyfriend are/were Computer science majors, and really enjoy working in that field.
DeleteHi everyone, my name is Octavio Barajas and I am 20 years old. This is my fourth year at CSUB. I am a Business Management major and hope to graduate in the next year. I am from McFarland, which is about 30 minutes north of Bakersfield. I have lived in McFarland all my life, but I am considering moving to Bakersfield to be closer to school and work. However, I’m not to sure if I will make the move since I just purchased a home in McFarland about a year ago. I work for Coca-Cola and have been there for a little over two years now. I hope to be able to move up in the company once I receive my degree, and hopefully one day be in charge of the Bakersfield branch. That however, is very far away from now. For now, I am putting in the long hours both at work and school like the majority of you. I am taking this online class to save myself the drive time to school, as well as some gas money. The farthest that I have traveled has been to Mexico, to visit my grandparents. One of the most interesting experiences I’ve had. Everything is so relaxed and no one worries about the time, unlike here where there aren’t enough hours in the day to finish everything we have to do. Well that’s just a little about me, I am eager to get this quarter started and hopefully pass all of my classes.
ReplyDeleteI live in Delano and find online classes very convenient for students like ourselves who have to travel a long distance to attend lectured courses.

ReplyDeleteHello everyone! My name is Jeorgina Lopez and I am 21 years old. I currently expect to graduate CSUB with a Bachelors in Sociology and a minor in Psychology at the end of this quarter. Before becoming a Sociology major I was a nursing major and soon realized this field, while it is very interesting, it was not something I could endure for a long time. I love interacting with people, but what I enjoy more is watching how we interact with one another. As of now, I live with my parents in the small town of Lamont and work at the Taco Bell at the TA near the grapevine. Before starting work here I never pictured myself working at a fast foo restaurant but now I am really enjoying it. This place allows me to meet and interact with people from all realms from truck drivers to families traveling from places like India and England. Working full time and going to school full time made me decide in enrolling into an online class. I have taken online classes before and enjoy the commodity of being able to do my homework right from the comfort of my bed. The farthest I have traveled from home was about 10 years ago when I went to Washington D.C. through a program for low-income students geared at providing civic duty enrichment and patriotism. I do not have any specific favorite books but enjoy reading romance novels and some biographies. I look forward to learning from you as well as reading your posts!
ReplyDeleteHi Jeorgina! I enjoyed reading your post. Like you, I love interacting with people and watching people interact with one another. I think that is why I like to watch reality shows, such as Survivor. I can easily sit down on a bench at the mall and watch people for hours. That sounds really creapy, but I love to see how people get along socially. Good luck to you in the class. It seems like it will be really enjoyable. Have a great week.
DeleteNot creepy at all! I enjoy doing that too !
DeleteHi everyone! My name is Lisa Lawrence. I am taking this course to fulfill my requirement for my major, Liberal Studies. I have worked in the school districts for a long time, and I decided to finally go back to college to become a teacher. I am so excited, because I am in my fourth year already. Time has really flown by. I am ready to graduate with my Bachelors Degree and start teaching. This school year, I actually will get to substitute as a teacher, so that is also exciting. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, and have basically grown roots here. I would like to one day move to the Bay area. I am unsure when that will happen. Maybe it will be when I retire. I am taking this course online only because my schedule this quarter is horrendous. This class gives me the flexibility to do my work anytime at home, which is always a bonus. I love reading and studying the Bible especially because of the history and political issues involved. The furthest I have ever traveled is to Colorado. I do not like to fly, but I love to hop in the car and drive. I love California, so I have driven mostly throughout California, and I still have so much to see. One of my favorite things to do when traveling is eat. I like to eat different ethnic foods, but my favorite is sushi. I love any type of seafood, but sushi would be one of my favorites. I look forward to this class, and reading everyone’s posts.
ReplyDeleteI was never a big fan of Sushi until this summer. I had never tried it before it just smelt bad and didn't look very appetizing. After my friends talked me into just having one small bite. It became number two on my favorite foods. =)
DeleteIt is so great that you tried it! Most people will not even go that far.
DeleteI am still amazed by the variety of experiences that everyone brings.

Hello!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Joseph Jimenez and I am a Psychology major and Sociology minor. I am from Bakersfield, born and raised, and I love this city. B-town is so close to the Coast, L.A., San Francisco, Magic Mountain and Disneyland. I mean what else could anyone ask for? I am taking this course to satisfy the GWAR requirement, and hopefully I pass with flying colors. I work full time and go to school full time not to mention I have three children 12, 13 and 15 years old. If you have ever heard the term " The last straw on the camels back" you'll have some insight into my life and which is why I am taking this course online. My favorite food is my Mother's Chile Verde, it's her specialty. I love food and can't wait for the restaurant review. The furthest I have ever traveled was to central Mexico to the city of La Piedad in the the state of Michoacan. We've flown and driven there. It is a very nice city with a beautiful plaza and large cathedral. I hope to make this class a great learning experience and hope to meet some of my class mates as well.
Wow Joseph! You are a busy guy, and all three of your kids are teenagers! I hope you have a great quarter. I enjoyed reading your post.
DeleteMAYBE YOU COULD HELP ME WITH SOME ESSAYS BY PROOFREADING? :)
DeleteSounds good! I'm sure I will need all the help I can get too!
DeleteHello fellow classmates! My name is Arianna Prendergast.I am currently a senior this year, I transferred from Bakersfield College in January of 2012. I was really nervous about starting CSUB because I thought it was going to be extremely difficult. While I was still at BC a few of my friends had transferred and they did great at BC, but they were failing their classes at CSUB. To my surprise I actually really like CSUB. The quarter system is much better than semesters. I was born and raised in Delano, I am taking this class for the GWAR requirement. I am a mother to a four year old boy who has the ability to make my heart melt even on my worst days. I am taking an online class reason being it is much more convenient than actually having to drive to Bakersfield and leaving my son with a baby sitter. My major is Liberal Studies, my dream is to become a special education teacher for high school students. I have observed classes before, but I always find myself having a blast with special ed students. My favorite food would have to be Mexican food. I like tortas, enchildas, and tacos. The farthest I have traveled was to Washington D.C. I was an eighth grader and was chosen to be part of a program known as "Close Up". I look forward to this class and hope to hear from you guys soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Arianna, what exactly is "Close Up" and what did you do in that program? Also, will you be going to Grad School after you get your degree in Liberal Studies?
ReplyDeleteHello Brandi, basically "Close Up" is a program where every school site would pick ten students who were interested in joining the program. Students were chosen depending on their grades and attendance. It was a very educational experience we stayed in Washington D.C. for a week. Also, we seen the White House as well as other important monuments. I would like to go to Grad School and I am really looking forward to starting and finishing my credential.
DeleteMy name is Lauren Chin, I am 21 years old, and have lived in Bakersfield all my life. I am a Biology major and an English minor. This is my fourth year at CSUB and I eventually hope to get into the UC Davis veterinary program. Most of my summer has been spent working at a local vet's office and training for The Disneyland Half Marathon. I enjoy reading, cooking, and running with my dogs. The science and math classes required for my major usually have priority when putting together my schedule so I end up taking Gen Ed classes online. I am taking this one in particular to fulfill my GWAR requirement. So far, I have always enjoyed my online classes and it seems I will enjoy this one just as much. I look forward to meeting everyone this October.
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren,
Deleteglad you were able to post.
dr. s
Hello Lauren, nice to meet you. I am a biology major as well. A veterinary program seems every interesting and you are lucky you had the chance to work at a vet's office. That is the sort of summer job I wish I could get. Looking forward to meeting you in October.
DeleteHello, my name is Jason Hunt. I turned 25 yesterday. I was born in Ventura and raised throughout Ventura County. I moved to Bakersfield just before graduating high school in 2005. I currently live alone downtown. I am a Psych major. Outside of school I work full-time as a Site Auditor for SolarCity, testing the efficiency of homes looking to have solar panels installed. I am also somewhat of an engine builder/mechanic in my spare time, as well as a musician, and computer nerd. If you haven't figured by now, I'm taking online courses because it's the only thing time permits in my busy schedule. I'm looking to obtain my Masters and a PPS credential to get into educational psychology. I'm not picky with the arts or food, as i tend not to place preferences on genres or categories, and more on specific choices. I look forward to the class and our discussions together. =)
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Vanessa Zamora. I am 25 years old. I am full time student, who is majoring in sociology and minoring in political science. I work full time in a local restaurant as a waitress in my hometown Delano, Ca. I am taking this class to meet the GWAR requirement. I chose to take this class online because it fits with my work schedule. I try to take most of my classes all on the same day, so that I only have to drive to bakersfield two days out of the week. Most students might think thats crazy to do. Back to back classes can get tiring. But with these lovely gas prices I have no choice. I don't want to have to be driving back and forth monday -friday. Let's see, my favorite book I would have to say is, Twilight. My favorite food is pizza, I know the dough is so bad and fattening but my taste buds just can't seem to get enough of it. It's a good thing that my favorite hobby is jogging. I get to burn the fat and relax while I jog. The reason I enjoy jogging so much, is simply because I like to get away from everyone and just relax. I have never taken a class online that involves blog entries, I am pretty excited to see how this goes.
ReplyDeleteHi my names Brad Phelps. I am 26 years old and I am a full time student at CSUB and I am majoring in Peak. I work for a drilling company in town and attend school full time as well. I am taking this class to fulfill the GWAR requirement, and I am taking it online because i just like the idea of online classes and not having to go to school and sit in a boring classroom all day. My favorite books are Eragon, and the secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel series. I have lots of favorite foods, but i would have to say that my favorite is filet mignon. i cant get enough of it. The farthest that i have ever traveled from here would be when i went to Bora Bora for my honeymoon.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone my name is Monica Lovato and I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in New Mexico. I moved to Taft about 5 years ago to play volleyball and softball at Taft College. Once I graduated from Taft College I transferred to CSUB where I am majoring in Biology and minoring in chemistry. Upon graduation I would like to become a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, which requires more schooling and a year internship at a hospital. I am taking this course to fulfill the GWAR requirement. When I am not at school I work part-time as a receptionist at a recreation center in Taft. I love my job because most days I can study and work at the same time. Jodi Picoult books are my favorite and I have read almost all of them. My fiancé and I are expecting our first child due in April. We are both excited and nervous. Right now my favorite food is anything with chile! I am looking forward to this class and learning a little bit about everyone!
ReplyDeleteHello Monica,
DeleteIt was nice reading your post. I found it interesting that you moved all the way from New Mexico to Taft. To play sports is a big step for someone in college. Did you have anyone that you knew in Taft before you moved there? My daughter played volleyball and softball in high school and was offered a scholarship to play softball in Michigan, but she did not want to. She ended up joining the military instead. She really loves playing softball and I enjoyed watching the games. It is real nice to get to know a little about everyone and hope to meet everyone in October.
Thank you Claudia. I did not know anyone in Taft or anywhere in California before I moved, ALL of my family is in New Mexico. It was very hard but I wanted to know I could make it on my own. I only planed on staying here until I was done playing sports but I met my fiance and never left. I hope your daughter is doing well in the military. I have family that have served in the military and have told me it is a great experience.
DeleteHi everyone. My name is Abby Kielpinski. I am a senior at CSUB studying psychology. I am planning to attend graduate school to get my masters in marriage and family therapy. I have lived in Tehachapi for the last 10 years and moved to Bakersfield about a year ago to cut down on the commute and miles driven to and from school. I took this class to a) fulfill the GWAR requirement and b) to have another class with Professor Schmoll. I had a history course taught by him a few quarters back and really enjoyed his style of teaching. In addition to school I work part time at the Student Recreation Center on campus as member services assistant and a yoga instructor. I really enjoy the work and and environment. Yoga to me is one of the best ways to relieve the stress from work, school, and life itself. I have been able to truly relax my mind to remain stress free for the whole hour during my class. Something I consider one of my accomplishments. This fall quarter I am planning on traveling to the east coast with my mom to enjoy the fall color and visit some family. I have visited the area several times so that is the furthest I have every traveled from home. Online classes are perfect for taking them with you wherever you go. Anyway, I am really looking forward to this class!
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Erika Collier I am a senior at CSUB and I am studying psychology as my major and studio art as my minor! I enjoy every minute of my psychology classes as well as my art classes! I plan to graduate in the spring and continue on to get my master's degree maybe at CSUB or there are other school's I have been looking at as well. I want to get my degree as a LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) and work as a marriage therapist with a emphasize in sex therapy! I was born and raised in Tehachapi, CA and love it around this time of the year, I currently am living in Bakersfield since 2011 and just moved into a new apartment. Besides school I work at this little home town restaurant called Jake's Tex-Mex Cafe, we are pretty popular for our cake.. come in to try some anytime! I am very close to my mother and two brothers; my mother travels all over the world for her work as a manicurist, my one brother is a junior at Biola University studying Biology and wants to work in a lab, my other brother is a freshman in high school and is a awesome athlete! I also am very blessed to have an amazing other half and love of my life he currently is living in Dallas, TX. I am very excited to go visit him in November for Thanksgiving and meet most of his family, as well as see what the south is like! This will be the furthest I have ever traveled besides Colorado. Besides school, work and family I enjoy painting it is a huge passion of mine, playing basketball (I played for Bakersfield College for 2 years), working out (just started doing yoga and love it) and just spending time with my few but very close friends! I am looking forward to this year of school and to this class!
ReplyDeleteHey Erika!
DeleteExcited to be in this class with you...even though it's an online class. I had no idea about the painting and starting up yoga. I love to paint but never had the talent for it and yoga is absolutely wonderful! Have you been to the morning class at the recreation center? I really want to go to it but it's so early and all my classes and work are at night. Anyway, great to have a class with you. We will have to chat about our writing assignments at the gym.
Abby!
DeleteI didnt know you had this class either! lol! Yes I love to paint I did a little in high school and then started again since I am minoring in art. I took painting last quarter and loved it! And yes I have been going to the sunrise yoga and I completely love it, starts of my day so well! I didnt know if I would like it but It turns out I do and can't wait to go every tuesday and thursday! Yes we will since I am also working out besides yoga! lol
Hi everyone! My name is Taren Bolin. I was born and raised in Wasco, CA and now reside in Bakersfield. I am a full time employee with the State of California and a full time student at CSUB and I’m taking 1 class at BC. I just got engaged last week to a wonderful man and I couldn’t be more excited. Oh and did I mention I have a wonderful 5 year old daughter, she is a full time job in itself! So I’ve got a full plate!
ReplyDeleteI’ve being going to school for what feels like forever! I was accepted to Chico State back in 2004 and attended two years there right out of High School. Then, life got in the way and now I'm here finishing up my degree. I am majoring in Liberal Studies and hope to be an elementary school teacher within the next two years. I am taking this class to fulfill my GWAR Requirement. I am two quarters away from graduation so the end is near!
Due to my hectic schedule, online classes are the most fitting. I am looking forward to this course and I hope to have a successful quarter and add a nice big A+ to my transcript! Positive thinking never harmed anyone. I’m having a little bit of difficulty with the Blogspot, but mainly due to my work computer denying me access. So for now I’ll be uploading everything off of my Iphone and I apologize if it’s not pretty.
Good luck everyone!
Hi Kazi,
It’s so nice to meet you! I wish you luck in this course and I hope you achieve your goals of learning to write better in English. I too believe that I can improve in my writing skills and I hope to achieve the same goal! From what I understand English is one of the hardest languages to learn. I applaud you for your ability to be so fluent in English. I have tried to learn Spanish and Italian and have failed miserably. Good luck to you!
Taren
Hello class,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Sophia Asante and I am currently a pre-nursing major at CSUB. I am not from Bakersfield. I moved here about 7 months ago. I transferred from Cal State Fullerton hoping that I would be able to get into the nursing program here at CSUB. I am here all by myself. I had no family members or friends living here, so it does get very boring at times but being a full-time student and working full time as well helps, kind of. I am a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and I absolutely love it. I believe that being a CNA was what really wanted me to pursue a career in nursing. I am taking this online course to fulfill my GWAR Requirements for graduation and I am ready to improve my writing skills. I hope we all have a great quarter!
Hello everybody! My name is Travis Boos and I fifth year student at CSUB and also a mathematics and Spanish major. I am currently taking this class in order to fulfill the GWAR requirement and I've had quite a few problems with my classes this quarter, which is why I'm responding so late. The farthest I have ever travelled away from home would be when I studied abroad last year in southern Spain in a city called Granada. I studied through a program called CSUIP (CSU International Programs) and I can honestly say it was the most amazing thing I have ever done. I was able to enter into an environment and culture unlike my own and study Spanish at the University of Granada. Having said all that, if one of you is ever interested in studying in another program, I would most definitely recommend it! Other than that, I am looking forward to taking this class as I don't write too often in the math department and expect to enhance my writing skills.
ReplyDeleteHi, all!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Felix Diaz, I'm a Los Angeles native who moved to Bakersfield, CA at age thirteen. I'm a senior majoring in Sociology. I chose to take this online course because Dr. Brett Schmoll is the best professor West of the Mississippi (possibly the world - this will be contingent on my grade at the end of the quarter). I have a plethora of favorite books, but the one that changed my life is "Always Running" by Luis J. Rodriguez. The book explains the life of a young Mexican-American growing up in inner-city East Los Angeles(my hometown). This teenager goes through many downfalls at such a young age and experiences some very horrifying things. The reason this book is my favorite is because we share similar experiences, and this book exemplifies that no matter what life throws at someone, anything is possible through good direction and perseverance.
This question is like your girlfriend/wife/fiance asking "when is our anniversary?" I love all food! However, I'm currently on a "see-food" diet; I "see food" and I eat it. I've only been to Vegas and Mexico, other than that, I have yet to travel a long-distance. Over the summer I just worked, exercised, read, researched, thought a lot, planned, and spent time with my family.
Oh, and I'm a very peculiar person (aren't we all?).
Good luck, everyone.
