WEEKLY TASKS:
There are three tasks each week:
First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words)which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph.

The word I would have to choose as my favorite word or at least one of my favorite words is a word that people use very loosely and often. This word is viewed as a very simple word, but to me, it has a much deeper meaning. It is an adjective and is used to describe people, places, and things that are wonderful. The word is Amazing! According to dictionary.com this word is defined as causing great surprise and /or a sudden wonder. The reason I choose this word is because, as I already mentioned, it has a meaning beyond what we use it for. Many people use this word when they are talking about something that is “cool” to them or different. This word though, should not be used to describe something that is cool but instead be used for it's actual purpose. The proper way to use the word amazing is when describing something that inspires and/or is unique to us. Something that surprises us like never before and that is wonderful beyond what we have seen. For example, I believe in God and, to me, God is amazing. God inspires me to try and live a good life. He is perfection and unique. Honestly, when we use the word amazing in the proper way, there are not a lot of people, places, or things that fall into the category of amazing. Yes this word is simple but the definition of it is so much more powerful then what the world has portrayed it to be.
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea,
DeleteNice word choice. I've seen things many different times in many different places that really have no better word to describe them other than Amazing. I agree most times the word is used much more loosely than intended.
Andrea, I agree with you the word amazing is much more powerful than the world has portrayed it do be. I just feel that the word amazing also has a different meaning not just what is written in the dictionary. We (humans) have adapted the word to have more than one meaning and that is why I think that language could get a little confusing because of so many different meanings one word could have.
DeleteThe word amazing is definitely misused by most in society. I also feel that that definition, while universal in meaning, may hold differently to an individual. Just like your example is true for you, it may hold a different meaning for something else to the next person. Great blog!
DeleteI got to see my nephew be born! Now that is amazing! I loved your post. The word "amazing" can have different meanings for different people. I agree that it nice when it is not over used, and that when someone says it, it has real meaning. Thanks for your post! -Lisa
DeleteReally good start to the topic! I hope something amazing happens to you this week!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language is Responsibility. So many people either stress their responsibilities or they disregard them and both cases can have a profound impact on the outcome of the situation. The word is used in all walks of life and has a pretty universal meaning, I think. Of course, as we get older the meaning of responsibility changes from year-to-year as life progresses. The word is meaningful to me because for most of my professional and adult life I have been surrounded by people who live to “pass the buck” in an attempt superimpose their responsibilities onto someone else, and I think we, as a society, have made a bad habit of finding ways to disburse responsibility is such a way there’s often times no clear picture of who is responsible. I’m sure we can all agree we’ve been in a situation, at least once, where someone embracing their responsibilities would’ve prompted a far better outcome. The brighter side of responsibility can, also, be the more enjoyable side. I love the responsibility of teaching my son new things and taking him places to show him things he’s never seen before. I think for most of us, responsibility comes with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and it’s that sense of pride and accomplishment that drives us forward into tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteBrandon you took a word that I live by and truley respect with my life. Responsibility can be a scary thing but just as you explained it, can also be a very rewarding. It will fill us with pride and give us that sense of accomplishment that we all work so hard for. Being responsible is a hard job to take on but keeping it on the positive, can be the best thing in your life and does keep us driven forward.
DeleteThe word I choose is money and it is my favorite because it is a very powerful word; at least on our planet Earth. People are so focused on money sometimes that they loose sight of who they really are. We have big businesses who are polluting our planet all because they are so focused on money they don't care about our health or the Earth. Also when you have money it seems like the more you want more. Just one little word has such an impact in our world which I sometimes feel is sad. Although I understand that we need money to survive I feel people loose sight that there are other important aspects in life. People should focus on happiness and although you need money you also need much more than that. Like I would say you need love, family and friendship. Money is such a small word with out five letters, yet it has had such a big impact in the world. It is also my favorite word however because Mr. Krab's from Spongebob Squarepants is obsessed with it and I think its so funny how he is always singing and just plain talking about money. Money is a fun word to say because you see people's eyes light up just like Mr. Krab's on Spongebob.
ReplyDeleteNancy you are right that money is a very powerful word; however, we all say that money doesn't bring happiness but i think that in real world it does bring a little bit more happiness than we admit. Being obsessed with money is bad but having money is a wonderful thing. All the divorces that take place, most of the time it is not so much about the relationship but its because of the lack of money. Money is something we need each and every day and sometimes not having it doesn't make me feel very good. Great post!
DeleteIt is mind blowing how much society focus and surrounds itself on money. Everything we do in life is somehow effected by money. The expression "Nothing in life is free" is extremely overused, but still very true! good word!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language is love. The reason this word is my favorite word is because it is probably the only word that a dictionary can’t define. Many people use this word in many different ways, from saying they love a type of food to saying they love a person. However, I don’t think all of them can put one single definition on it. The word love has such a powerful affect that only the people that have experienced can understand it. Yes love can make you feel a certain way and it can make you do practically anything for that object or person you love but it can’t be explained. This is why I find the word love so fascinating. It is a simple four letter word, but the meaning it has behind it is different for every person. It is a word so powerful that it has even caused people to commit crime, be it to commit crime for the love of money or for the love for someone, a simple four letter word has such power that it can literally change history. If it wasn’t for this word I probably wouldn’t be enjoying all of the freedoms I do. If it wasn’t for the love that our soldiers have for our country we wouldn’t have all of the freedoms we do. The word love fascinates me because it is indefinable by the dictionary and can provoke such a powerful feeling that can literally change the world.
ReplyDeleteOctavio,
DeleteI never realized that; your right the word love can never truly be defined by the dictionary I found that interesting.
Octavio, I was debating love as my favorite word and it is because of the same reasons you explained. Love could have many meanings which all depend on the person using it. Your right it is such a small word yet it has so much power. I really loved your post!
DeleteOctavio, I also was thinking of picking the word love as my favorite because it was the first thing that came to my mind. You are so right when you say it is indefinable, and it is very interesting to ask someone to define it. You will get so many definitions from every single person you ask and that is simply amazing for such a small word.
DeleteNicely done, I was debating with this word as well, but then realized that I don't say it as much as I used to when I was younger when I thought I loved everything and everyone.
DeleteIt wasn't until later when I realized how love really was that I stopped "loving" everything.
You are right. No dictionary can accurately define love because so much of the definition comes from what we feel. Even still love is nearly indescribable even if you think you know what it is all about. I'd say the best way to define love is to share experiences in your life that make you feel love. Great post!
DeleteAn English language word that I can call my favorite is tough to think of. However, the first word that came to mind would have to be an adjective. The word can describe feelings towards something, somewhere, or someone. It can also be an act, attitude, or a character trait. Tenacious is powerful, but very expressive. It can be describing to hold on to something immensely. An unforgettable memory that one holds on to, of a loved one can be a tenacious memory. The word can also be one to describe someone; a stubborn or persistent person would be a tenacious person. A person can have tenacity or can be tenaciously. In the work force, it is nice when a person is tenacious in their work ethic, especially if they are in sales. One can have a tenacious courage, one who is not afraid to keep going forward even if it is a frightening road ahead.. The word tenacious is not commonly used but when it is, it carries a significant meaning. I would love to think that I if only once, can be tenacious or have a character with tenacity in my lifetime, would be great.
ReplyDeleteThe English word I most like would have to be “love.” According to dictionary.com, love means a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. To me personally, love means passion and force, and love has both qualities-positive and negative; it all depends on how one uses it. If everyday people wake up and just say “I love” then they will be able to identify their passion, will be able to spread love all day and will be able to touch each and every person’s life in a very positive way. I believe that the word love has more weight, importance, and passion than we can ever imagine. Love is not only for Valentine’s Day or holidays; rather, it is a word that should be used each and every day. I urge everybody to try this just for one week- wake up in the morning and take a deep breath and just say “I love” and try to find out throughout the day that what was that you really LOVED about that day? Love helps us heal, enables us to see and experience life differently, and it changes our perception. Let’s all give love a try.

DeleteKazi, I'm on board! I will try to do that this week! The word "love" has really lost its meaning with many people. I think it is hard for many, because they have not seen or experienced real love. There is this book called "No Man is an Island," by Thomas Merton. It's one of my favorites! The first chapter is titled “Love Can be Kept Only by Being Given Away." It is one of those books that you cannot read once and get everything out of it. I highly recommend it! Thanks for your post. -Lisa
DeleteI agree, the word love is so powerful and has many different meanings to others. I think the word love is a positive but some people change it into a negative by confusing love with something else.
DeleteKazi,
DeleteYou're right about the word love. I never realized how many different forms of love there were until my son was born, and I realized my love for him was different than the love I felt for other people. Good choice.
I hug and kiss every person in my family and I attribute this to love. Sometimes I don't or can't express just how much I love something or someone, however; there is no doubt about how I feel when I love.
DeleteI agree with you, love is a very important word. It is important to spread the love. I do think sometimes the word love is used very lose sometimes. It is interesting that love can mean something negative. Love and negative are two words I never really put together but once I thought about it, it does make sense. I really liked they way you explained love.
DeleteOne of my favorite words in English is "peace." I think of the word "peace," and how it is a recognizable word worldwide. I know some people in other countries say the word "peace" in their own foreign language, but I feel that it is a recognizable word to many who do not speak English. According to the dictionary, peace simply means a state of mutual harmony between people or groups. In the Bible, the book of Romans chapter twelve, verse eighteen, it says “If at all possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” I love how this scripture reads, because it is for the person who is reading it. It really comes down to us individually. Are we going to try our best to live at peace with everyone? I think people think of living at peace when it is close to the holidays, or when a loved one is sent to war. However, peace can be lived everyday with our neighbors, with our friends, with our family, and most importantly with our enemy. We all need and desire peace. Sometimes we desire peace in the big things, and sometimes we need peace in the small things. For instance, I know when I am preparing for a test, I have to sometimes stop and remind myself to have peace within. It is such a busy world, and we all forget to breathe sometimes. Take a breath, and realize that we are the ones who make a difference. Live peacefully with yourself and others.
ReplyDeleteLisa, You said it well. We all need peace even within our selves. In order to have peace with others we should capture peace within. I also have to remind myself to slow down and try to live more peacefully and not only during those holidays you were talking about, but more often. The challenge of surching for that peace every day and sharing it, is something we all ought to work on. I will try to continue to work on that.
DeleteLisa love your post! Peace is another word that I really like, and I think peace and love are intertwined. To me peace starts within myself and then it just spreads out like a bonfire. If I am not in peace, I don't love myself and when I don't love myself I don't love others, and I think that's what wrong with today's world; we just want to find peace in others and totally discount ourselves. I think peace and love has domino effect, so as you've said live peacefully with yourself and others.
DeleteLisa, peace is a great word. If only more people would look deep into themselves and be able to live peacefully with others. If more of us did this, I think life would be a lot easier. Not only would there be less wars, but daily life would also be more enjoyable.
DeleteLisa,
DeleteThis was a great post and a great word choice! Peace also was one of the first words that came to my mind when thinking of a word to chose. I love it because it is one of the fruits of the spirit in the Bible. I love it to because it does come down to each individual, I believe everyone must find peace with themselves then they can find peace in the world!
Lisa,
ReplyDeleteI agre with what you said about the bible and how it teaches us how to live in peace everyday. But of course people only try to live in peace during the holidays. Peace is a very well known to America and the world but its a word that is hardly ever used these days.
My choice of word in the English language would be the adjective fickle. For those who are unsure of the meaning or have never heard of it, the meaning of fickle is to not be constant, likely to change, instability, etc. I can remember the very first time I ever heard this word being used. I was a freshman in high school and reading Romeo and Juliet in my English class. The word fickle was used to describe Romeo and how he easily changed his mind from being in love with one girl then before you know it he was in love with Juliet. This word has stuck with me ever since and is a word I use in my everyday vocabulary. I especially use this word when speaking and giving relationship advice to my closest friends, and most of them look at me puzzled when I use it. By using this word I usually can teach at least one person the meaning of it, and that gives me a good feeling knowing I can teach someone something new.
ReplyDeleteIts funny how a word like that can have a particular origin for you. It'd be wonderful if we could draw individual lines back to when and where the words we use had their origins in our minds....I wonder if I have learned any words from Shakespeare...maybe nunnery.
DeleteWho know, but this was a good response.
I have to agree, fickle is a good word. It's kind of a funny word. I don't use it enough, and now I will try to use it more!
DeleteI like your choice of word, 'fickle', it's just fun to say and and interesting way to describe constant change. Although I have not used this word in my vocabulary, and I am sure it is in general and under used adjective, it's funny to think back on fickle situations in your life. Good post!
DeleteTAREN WRITES...
DeleteThis entry made me laugh, I too remember Romeo being described as fickle. Romeo and Juliet was my favorite movie, well I enjoy every movie with Leonardo Dicaprio. It’s an unusual word with such a distinct meaning. I can think of a couple friends that are extremely fickle. I’ll have to remember the next time we are having a serious discussion on relationships. Thanks for giving me a new word to add to my vocabulary.
For me this was a very hard question to answer, I think because I have so many favorite words when I think about and because I think a lot of people pick the same set of words often. I started thinking what is important in my life and what words are involved in it, I came to conclusion of my relationship with God. Then the verses in the Bible that make up the beatitudes but there were to many words there. I then started to think of the fruits of the spirit which are all single words: love, peace, faithfulness, kindness, gentleness, goodness, patience, joy and self-control. I found I love all of these words and try to incorporate them into my everyday living, but the one I found that I love the most is faithfulness or even just faith. Faith is what you build your life on, you have to have faith to believe in yourself that you can make it through the day. You have to have faith to believe in God and the goodness in the world. You have to have faith in people we have relationships with and there must be faithfulness with the person you want to make your husband or wife. You have to have faith that professor's, coach's, doctor's, pastor's and other people of this nature really know what they are talking about and are steering you in the right direction. You have to have faith that God will protect you and bless you when you trust that he is watching over you. Faith is something we experience everyday and everyone is put through, if you don't have faith in every aspect of your life how can you keep living? Faith and faithfulness drive the human race to continue on every day, and there is proof in an individuals life when they have no faith or never experience faithfulness.
ReplyDeleteFaith/faithfulness is a great word, and holds so much power. I specifically like how the word is not taken lightly. To say you have faith in something or someone has a deep feeling of commitment and trust.
DeleteIt is also amazing how one can be faithful to ourselves by keeping the ideals or opinions we have. Also, of knowing and keeping our self-worth. Awesome word!
DeleteReading this was very touching, because not many people get to experience faith. Nicely put Erika.
DeleteHaving faith means that you have such a large amount of commitment and trust, for me that mean a lot. I am in a long distance relationship of little over two years and faith is something I really have to have daily.. and thats why I chose this word!
DeleteThanks guys for the comments!
Beautiful day, beautiful art, beautiful person are common phrases we hear around of us each day. Beautiful is a word that, in my opinion, can help change the mood of almost anyone. I love using this word around my friends and family on a constant basis as I see the effect this word has on them. At times my coworkers will come into work feeling down and upset because of personal problems, but as soon as I tell them, “Wow you look beautiful today!” everything changes. I love using this word and making people feel special and appreciated. Many times that is all we need in order for our day to be better. However, the word beautiful cannot be used lightly, but rather must have genuine meaning and feeling behind it. Also, I love the word beautiful as it not only allows me to describe physical attributes but personality as well. When I enjoy the company of a friend I let them know what a beautiful personality they have and how much I value their friendship because of it. Someone can also have a beautiful soul as they are caring for others and are willing to do anything for those they love and even for a complete stranger. Beautiful can be used I many different ways, but my favorite way is to use it with those I love. Using this word I can demonstrate my love and appreciation for them, and also be part of the best part in their day maybe changing how they feel about themselves.
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more! I love that the word beautiful can be used to describe so many different things, and that it is not confined to a physical description.
DeleteBeautiful is such a versatile word.
DeleteB-e-a-uuuutiful post and I couldn't agree more. Beautiful is such a great word in the beautiful language of english.
DeleteI really liked your post. I think beautiful is on my top 5 favorite words. What I like most about this word is that we can all have our own unique thought of what beautiful is. I have recently got a new job and I feel that my boss is beautiful inside and out because even though he is a man, he has the sweetest personality.
DeleteOne of my favorite words to use is culture. Culture is heavily influenced in our everyday lives, and helps us better understand the world around us. There are several definitions for culture; however, there is one definition in particular that comes to mind. Culture is the behaviors and beliefs characteristics of a particular social, ethnic, or age group. The reason why I find this word so meaningful is because everyone can identify with a culture. Also it is interesting that cultures themselves can be so different from one another, yet there is a universal idea of its grouping. Being identified with a culture can make people feel a wide range of emotions as well. One might feel prideful of their culture, or even embarrassed. When I was growing up I had a hard time identifying myself with a particular ethnic culture. My father is Hispanic and my mother is Caucasian. Although I look more Hispanic than Caucasian, I was not raised around a traditional Hispanic culture. Understandably, I was often mistakenly identified with a culture that I did not identify myself with. It is impressive how strong, weak, large, small each culture can be.
ReplyDeleteAs I thought about my favorite word in the English language I realized that it was pretty hard. There are so many words that I say a lot, but right now they don’t come to mind. I guess a word that I really admire in the English language is the word “love” because there are so many definitions for it. We use the word love in so many different ways and there are so many types of love. Usually we will say things like, “I love spaghetti so much.” This love is different, and it can’t be compared to saying, “I love you so much that I would give my life for you.” Then the word love has so many categories. There’s fraternal love, parental love, spiritual love, and love between couples. To so many love is defined differently. When I think about the word love in the English language I usually imagine weddings, couples holding hands, the color red, Romeo & Juliet, and so many other things. It is also a word that is so overused in many songs. How much does this word come up in music? It’s the most popular topic sang about. I use this word every day when my husband leaves for work, constantly when I’m with my daughter, and I even say it out loud to my other unborn daughter. Love is one of the most complicated words in the English language and that is why it’s my favorite.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language is “why”. I have that word written in my medicine cabinet, so every morning I see it when I brush my teeth and contemplate why all day. Also, “why” is not just a word, it’s a question, and as a Philosophy major, I ask and am asked “why?” This word can be rather annoying when asked by a young child. My nephew is four and when I talk to him, he always asks, “Why are you so far away?” I give the response that I’m in school. He asks, “Why?” so I tell him that is where people go to learn more. He follows this up with “Why?” and the cycle continues until we get off the phone because I like to give as many answers as I possibly can.
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happens when I ask why. I try to answer myself, and often times when I say/ask “why” repeatedly, I irritate people, but it’s a great way to gain insight. If we didn’t have the word why, I’m sure we would have another word or series of words that we would use instead, but this word is fascinating to me. It’s not like the words, what, when, how, or where because those words all have an ending answer. But when you ask “why?” just that one word is a gateway for open ended answers that you can keep on saying “why” at the end (posed as a question of course) and usually, I find that the final answer I get is, “because that’s the way it is, I have to go.” But I feel like I am constantly thinking of this word, and it’s definitely become my favorite over the years.
One of my favorite words in the English language would have to be the word "Absolutely". It was difficult to choose just one word, but when thinking of what word I say quite a bit; this was the one. The reason why I like to use the word so much is because of the power that lingers it in. "Absolute" increases the meaning by so much more simply because if it is absolute, then it is for sure. When speaking about the absolute, there is no hesitation or unsureness. In my line of work, my clients never want to hear any sense of unsureness and so the absoluteness that I can provide them helps me in many ways. I find that, along with sureness, it also provides comfort. When somebody asks if I can do something, and they receive a reply of "absolutely" they know that I'm standing behind my word and can be comforted that everything will be ok. I am certain that there or more words, or other words, that I like just as much, but of course when a question like this is asked..they all disappear! But if there is one word that I like to say, I would have to absolutely choose absolutely!
ReplyDeleteVery strong word. Definitive, and imbues confidence.
DeleteAbsolutely is a great word! It's nice and long. Good choice!
DeleteI couldn't agree more with your description of the word absolute. It does give a sense of reassurance when it is said in a time of need or trouble.
DeleteAbsolutely is actually my second favorite word!!! :)
DeleteIf I had to choose a favorite word in the English language, it would be the word 'subtle'. Not only does the word have an interesting spelling, but I also identify with it very strongly. I have always been one to stay out of the spotlight, but yet have a strong contribution at the same time, and that's the way i like it. The word 'subtle' is a great word to have when you don't want to express an implied weakness, in fact subtlety can be a sign of great strength. It stands as a unique word, with a very unique definition, and it can be deceptive, which make it a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteYou make a good point, Jason. I had never thought of great strength when I heard the word "subtle", but you are right.
DeleteJason you are right! many of us can be subtly strong while others can view us as weak.
DeleteIt was harder to pick my favorite English word than I originally thought it would be; after much deliberation, I narrowed it down to love. One way to define “love” is an emotion of strong attachment and personal attachment; I like this definition of love because it can be applied to so many things. Not only does this definition imply that you can love another person but also a food, sport, television show, movie, genre of music, or really anything. This particular definition of love shows how vestal the word “love” can be. There are also different types of love: romantic love, parental love, brotherly love, sisterly love, and the love between friends, just to name a few. Each type of love is different yet equally powerful. It has the power to make the sane insane, the good rob and kill; it has been at the core of some of the most horrible crimes in history. But love has been the inspiration for some of the most beautiful works of art, the biggest businesses, and greatest acts of charity in history. Because whether it is money, family, or humanity love is the most powerful motivation in the world. I remember talking about love in my high school philosophy class and my teacher pointed out that love is nearly impossible to explain because it is different for everyone. He is right. It is practically impossible to explain what love looks like or how it feels; it is something only those in the loving relationship can feel. It amazes me how such a seemingly simple word can be so complex.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite English word would have to be "lovely". According to dictionary.com, it means “charming or exquisitely beautiful”. It just sounds like a pretty word. Especially when someone with a British accent says it. I think that's why I like it so much. Almost all of my favorite movies and shows are based on British characters: Emma, Pride & Prejudice, Downton Abbey, etc. Words similar to "lovely" are used a lot in their vocabulary, and I love how it sounds when they say it. You can use it when you are describing a person, or maybe a quaint cottage, a trip you took out of town, or even a blouse you own. It's just a fun word to use. To me, it sounds more appealing to the ear than using “nice”. In my all-time favorite movie, The Holiday, my favorite character, Graham, uses it when he describes the girl he likes. I think that could also be one of the main reasons why I enjoy that word so much. It's funny how just by adding the suffix "ly" to love, it can totally change its meaning and sound. Lovely is a completely different word than love. That just shows how complex the English can be.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language is the word “love”. Nowadays the word love is tossed around lightly. To me, love is a very strong and emotional word. Love is a passionate word that symbolizes very strong and passionate feelings for someone. When you use the word love when telling someone how you feel about them, you are telling them that they mean everything to you. To you, that person that you use the word “love” for, that person is the most important person in the world and you are willing to do a lot of them to be happy. Actually, if they are happy then usually that makes you happy as well. Love is a very beautiful word that describes a very beautiful feeling. The feeling of love is very special and is only felt for very special people. Now, people tell people they love them when in reality they do not really love that person. We all know that love is very strong word and by people using it lightly, a lot of people get hurt when the person that said they love them betrays them or leaves them for someone else. That is why I take the word love seriously. I always told myself that love was a beautiful and special word and that when I found the one, I would use it wisely. My past boyfriends have told me they loved me but I never said it back, not until I met my boyfriend that I have now.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language is strength. When someone has the strength to accomplish a difficult Strength is doing something that you don’t want to do. My name, in Farsi, means strength. I love my name and I believe in the meaning of it. I figure they named it to me for a reason so I must stay true to that meaning. Strength gives someone a drive to accomplish something great. They come out of their storm, a whole stronger person. Years ago while I was in high school I started going to taekwondo because I needed an activity. Naturally at first, I didn’t care for it. Mr. Kidd was the one who encouraged me to try it out. He told me to give it a chance and I eventually came around to it. I eventually went on to receive my 2nd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. I met amazing people and made new friends. It gave me a sense of direction; to honor myself and my parents, to be strong and courteous and to accomplish my goals. Taekwondo helped me gain strength. There have been many times, in situations where I have needed to be strong. It also taught me courage, wisdom and integrity. It offered me a chance to grow stronger not only physically but mentally. When you find strength, you find a greater sense of yourself and becoming a whole different person with a new approach to things. Things do have a way of working out, great strength will take a person far.
ReplyDeleteHello Tavon, congrats on your Black Belt. I have heard that Taekwondo is hard work. Strength is a great word because it has two meanings. One could look at the word and think of physical strength. When I think of the word strength I think of inner strength. This is something most people have but may not know about it. Many obstacles in life in order to over come need inner strength. I have a friend whose husband used to beat her, one day she used her inner strength and moved to Texas with family. As you said that Taekwondo helped you gain inner strength,I think many people need to find something that will bring out their own individual strength.
DeleteMy favorite word in the English language is 'serendipity.' Has anyone seen the movie based off this word with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack? If not, it means a fortunate accident. In other words, an event that happened that wasn't planned or wasn't supposed to happen but the result of that event was a good one. Although there are several other words I admire in the English language I chose serendipity because when I saw this blog I was watching that movie with my family. Plus, I have always liked the sound and meaning behind the word so what better word to use. While watching the movie I started thinking about fortunate accidents in my own life and how glad I am for them. There have been so many events in my life that fall under in this description. Some lead to hidden strength, new friendships that would have never come about without a fortunate accident, growing love for the people in my life, and a greater sense of who I am. This word, for me personally, holds so much meaning and value. Plus, it is fun to say.
ReplyDeleteI like the sound of serendipity too. I can relate when you say that there have been events in your life that fall under this. Great post!
DeleteThinking about what my favorite word in the English language is was not difficult for me at all to do. The word "So", I use so often that I don't even catch myself when I use it. It seems to just come natural, or as my friends like to prefer of it as a habit. I never realized how much I would use it until a friend of mine brought it to my attention that It was annoying her with that word already. She would tell me, that when we conversate the only thing she remembers from the it, is hearing the word so. My friends have even came up with this game that they play when we are together. It's called guess how many times vanessa says the word "so". The word "so" to me just seems to fit perfectly into everything that I am saying. For instance, if I am trying to prove a point I give my reasoning first then sum it all up with the word, "so". On other occasions when someone is telling me something I don't like I will admit that I have a bad habit of responding, "so what's your point". But that's just the stubborn me talking. So, seeing as the word "so" seems to fit perfectly in all my conversations it will continue to be my favorite word.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language happens to be a word that represents my struggle. I have it tattooed on the same arm in two different forms. My word is Faith. Faith means a lot of things, for me the one I like the most is the Latin meaning of the word which means trust. It represents a trust I have in God, which I could never have in men. Growing up in the foster care system, I was never able to see my mom or dad side of the family. As I was growing up though, I remember searching for my grandma on my dad side of the family, never to have been able to reconnect. It has been a year since my grandma has passed away; it has also been a year since I got back in contact with her. To make a long story short, it had been nineteen years since I had last seen or heard from my grandmother. My thoughts running through my mind were that; the nineteen years of searching, hoping, and praying my dreams finally to come true. My thoughts come to a screeching because of the looming fact that she was dying, and she may die before I could see her. Unfortunately my worst fears came true, and she died before I could see her. My grandmother passed away two months before I was supposed to fly to North Carolina for my brothers wedding. That was the worst pain I have ever felt before. It was like someone had ripped out my voice box, and poked holes in my lungs. I may not have had the opportunity to see her or hug her one last time, but I was able to say good bye and I love you. Faith bought us back together at the right moment, and faith carries her with me every step of my way. In memory of my grandmother, I got the tattoo “walk by faith, not by sight”, with footprints that go through and around to roses. Faith gave me strength in my time of need, brought understanding to what made no sense, it granted closer, and erased the hurt. Faith allowed healing where time couldn’t, and faith is much more than just a five letter word. It means so much more, that the only definition that would suffice is the meaning of trust.

DeleteHi Britt,
I almost chose the same word. Faith is not something you can see, hear or touch. You can not prove it exists or prove it does not exists. It is inside of us and we do not have to question its existence. Beautiful story. Even though it was a sad story, I am glad you got to say your good byes.

One of my favorite words in the English language would be "Thank-You". This is because I feel that having manners is important regardless of age. Even though my son is still small every time someone does something nice for him, I always remind him that he needs to tell them thank-you. I want my son to grow up and never make someone feel as if their good deeds go unnoticed. I have witnessed many people doing favors for others and they do not even receive a mere thank-you in return. When people do not acknowledge the acts of kindness that is done for them, it makes them seem self absorbed. This can cause people to not want to help others in any way because they start to feel unappreciated. Not only is saying thank-you to our friends/family important, but as well as using it in the work force. For example, one day I was at Save Mart and the cashier looked very unhappy and was being border line rude to the customers. The man in front of me who was buying a couple things got upset at the cashier because he was throwing the merchandise in the bag, and he gave him his change without saying thank-you. When the customer was leaving he told the cashier, “you should say thank-you cause it is because of us customers that you have a job”. For some reason when the man said that remark that is when it dawned on me how much society rarely says it and no matter what the year is, it is still important and should not be forgotten.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite word in the English language would be a word I use often. When I pick a word I would ask myself "what single word do I favor?" I would have to say my favorite word is "what." I always ask "what happened?," "what did you say?" I am always asking myself and others questions, and the questions usually start with "what." There isn't a snappy ring to it or special meaning it is just a common word in my vocabulary that I happen to use often. When I research a topic "what?" is most likely the question I want to answer. There are other words that I enjoy pondering such as "happiness," but I don't use as often as "what." And the word "love" is how I feel about those close to me; however, I don't use the word as often as I should. So I would have to say the word "what" is my favorite word in the English language.
ReplyDeleteMy single favorite word in the English language is a word that is very important to me, family. My family is very important to me, they are a great support system and I do not know where I would be without them. Now as I have gotten a little bit older I have realized the value and importance of family. When I was younger, I feel like I took my family for granted. I knew they were always going to be there. Now that I am older, I appreciate the way my family was always there for me and taught me right from wrong. My mother, father and three sisters helped me become the person that I am today and I would not want to be any different. The word family is very important to me because now that I am starting my own family I want my child to value family as much as I do because there is nothing like family.

ReplyDeleteWhat is a world without inspiration? I would say boring and mediocre. My favorite word in the English dictionary is “inspire.” We should continue to keep inspiration going so we can a human race continue to grow. Not only to inspire others to but to be inspired as well. If we all step back and look at the world closely we can have inspiration from everything around us; whether it is learning, cooking, drawing or the beautiful flowers outside. Everyone no matter there age should continue to have dreams in life. We should never stop reaching for the stars and growing. Kids are a great model as they have no restriction on life and are inspired by everything around them. They are very impressionable, so we should allow them to have their dreams and take inspiration from us. I remember when I finally grew up and realized that my dreams were too far fetched. I believe that was a mistake. We can also take inspiration from children as they see the world though fresh eyes that do not judge. Without aspirations we are a hopeless society. We should never be restrained from what makes us happy due or give up hope. Stay positive and realize that there are life lessons to be learned from every experience, good and bad. In the movie “As Good As it Gets” Melvin tells Carol that “you make me want to be a better man.” She inspired him to be a better person. I choose the word inspire because it carries great meaning that can profoundly change us and the way we think, operate and communicate.
