WEEKLY TASKS:
There are three tasks each week:
First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words)which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question.
Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.
Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph.
The farthest I have been from home was when I traveled to Hawaii for my fifteenth birthday. In my culture we celebrate our fifteenth birthday as the day we become young ladies. I was very lucky because my parents asked me whether I wanted to go on a vacation of my choice for my fifteenth birthday or if I wanted to have a Quincenera. I of course choose to go to Hawaii. We left on the day of my birthday and it was about a six hour airplane ride. It was great I was so excited to get there and just start having fun, the best part at that time was that I got to go in December and miss school for a whole week just for my birthday. It was very exciting to be traveling to such a small island very far from home with the people I love. While over there I got to swim with the dolphins. I am an animal lover I love any and all kinds of animals so when they told me I would have the opportunity to swim with the dolphins I took it. I have to admit I was pretty nervous I knew how to swim, but being in a big pool full of dolphins was nerve racking. It was a feeling of nervousness and excitement at the same time. It was so great that I truly would recommend you to try it if you ever get the chance. Best part was I got to swim with the only whadolphin, crossbreed between a whale and dolphin, on the Island I even got to kiss it! I enjoyed seven days of adventure we went to a Lua, I danced on stage in front of many people, I learned how to scuba dive, my sister and I jumped off a big boat and plunged into the water. It was the best vacation I ever had. I have so many wonderful memories from my trip being very far from home. In the end I was very happy when we got back to Bakersfield. However I really hope I get to visit Hawaii again soon!
ReplyDeleteNancy,
DeleteWow, that sounds like it was very exciting and enjoyable trip. Swimming with dolphins sounds like an amazing thing to do. I am happy to have read your story and that your parents took you there for your birthday.
Hi Nancy,
DeleteHawaii is an awesome place to vacation. I've only been there once, and I would love to go back sometime. It sounds like you had a pretty amazing trip! Nice post.
Nancy,
DeleteIt sounds like you had a blast. I have been to Hawaii a few times because I have family there. I have never gone swimming with the dolphins but it sounds fun. I think you made the right choice.
Nancy,
DeleteThat sounds amazing! Hawaii sounds like a beautiful place to visit, I hope I can make a trip to Hawaii in my lifetime. Swimming with the dolphins sounds like a blast and a great experience.
That sounds like an awesome birthday! Lucky!
DeleteNancy,
DeleteIt is so awesome to hear you experienced this at such a young age. I bet it brought a lot of things into perspective.
Hello Nancy, I have always wanted to visit Hawaii. I think you made the right decision by choosing Hawaii over a quincenera.
DeleteI have never traveled outside of California and it is something that I would enjoy to do in my older years. My fiance and I both want to travel around the world and see what other cultures are like. To meet new people, taste new foods, and learn about their ways of living. The place I have always wanted to go to since I was five years old is Egypt. The reason being is to see the pyrmaids and the culture has always captivated my mind. Also, to go to Hawaii for all the beautiful beaches and hiking adventures one can do there.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the main question though, I have traveled at least in California. The farthest I have ever been from home is San Diego. I also have gone to the borderline of Mexico and California but I was to little to recall any of it. My trip to San Diego was an exciting trip. I was about six months pregnant and I was running in a race. The race is very famous and is called San Diego's Chocolate run. Once I heard about this event, I wanted to join in the fun. My fiance went with me for support and to obviouslly make sure that I did well and did not over push myself due to our little girl inside me. Once we got to San Diego the race was about to start in about two hours so I slept in the car for about half an hour. I was running on no sleep and I had to run in an hour. Once the race was over, all I remember was the finish line was full of chocolate, hence "chocolate run." And I was and am happy to say my daughter and I finished that run in a good time and felt very well. That same day, after the race, my fiance and I explored a hiking trail over looking the beach. It was one of the most beautiful sites I had yet seen. We did end up spending the night in a hotel because I was too exhausted to travel any longer. Even though it was not a far distance, I do admit that it was one of the best trips I have gone and very memerable.
Hi Andrea,
DeleteI love San Diego. My family and I love to vacation there because there's so much to do (and my wife LOVES the shopping). Great post.
Andrea,
DeleteThe Chocolate run sounds like an awesome race. I'm impressed that you were able to run the race and hike all on the same day, while being six months pregnant.
Andrea,
DeleteYour visit to San Diego sounded like a lot of fun. I am originally from San Diego, I lived there my whole life until I moved to Bakersfield with my husband about fourteen years ago. San Diego is a very active city, they always have many fun events and things to do. I never heard of a chocolate run, but sounds like it was fun and exciting.
Hi Andrea,
DeleteI too have always dreamed of going to Egypt. There is something thrilling about a country that has been around since the beginning of mankind. I think the pyramids would be amazing in person to see especially since they were build without the technology and tools we have today. Good luck in your future travels!
Yes, I def agree with you on traveling the world. San Diego is a beautiful place though.
DeleteI love San Diego. My best friend goes to school there and I try to take advantage of that. I highly recommend traveling. I haven't been outside of the U.S. but that is my goal that I hope to accomplish after I graduate.
DeleteSan Diego is a very beautiful place. I have only been there twice in my life and I enjoyed both times very much. I am sure that you will be able to travel farther in the future. Maybe even for your honeymoon. Good luck!
DeleteGreat post Andrea. San Diego is also one of my favorite destination in California. Usually sometimes we even use the Amtrak to go to San Diego, and once we are there we just walk the entire city or use public transportation, and my kids just loves it. Last time we were there we did the Navy ship tour, and it was really nice. I love the whether, people, and the food there. I really enjoyed reading about your chocolate run, and I have to try it sometime in the future.
ReplyDeleteI have been all over the country for work, and, I guess, the furthest from home I’ve been is Orlando Florida. I went to Florida to attend a Motorsports trade show, and I spent about four days there. Florida is a very unique place compared to what most of us are used to here in California. I stayed in a hotel near downtown Orlando and right across the highway was a swamp! There were warnings on the news every morning to watch out for all kinds of random critters crossing the roads. The weather there can be crazy too. When I landed at the airport, after getting my bags and keys to the rental car, I walked outside, and the humidity was so high water was falling from the roof of the parking structure like it was raining. When I travel, I like to take a little time to just drive around and see whatever’s around. The most amazing part, I think, is how so many of the roads and housing developments seem to be carved out of the wilderness. The roads are surrounded by big trees a lush grass, and so many homes share their backyard fence with the backwoods. Orlando is a very interesting place, and I’d like to go there for vacation one day.
ReplyDeleteBrandon,
DeleteI have never been to Orlando, Florida, but it sounds pretty amazing to be so close to nature and a little scary. I think it is pretty cool you get to travel for work and you get to see so much of the world, however it also sounds like you truly can't relax because you are there working. Hopefully you get the chance to go back and this time for vacation so you could go and just relax. If I ever get the chance I will try to visit Orlando, Florida and get a little closer to nature than what I am used to here in Bakersfield.
Brandon,
DeleteI've always wanted to visit Florida but I've been warned about the "critters" that are frequent there. I'm not sure I would be able to handle alligator sightings. But it still sounds like an interesting place to visit and enjoy the different culture.
I agree with you about the humidity, it is ridiculous. When I went to Florida I tried to keep an eye on all the swamps, to see if there were any alligators. Everything is so green over there, unlike here. Orlando is a great place to go on vaction, I am sure you would like it!
DeleteBrandon I agree with you about the humidity in Orlando, and I don't know if you were able to experience their thunderstorms and rain, but when I was visiting Disney world, I found many similarities between California and Orlando but these two states weather is just the opposite. While visiting Orlando did you have any encounter with snakes or alligators?
ReplyDeleteThe farthest I have ever traveled from home was roughly 2,900 miles away from Bakersfield, CA. That put me in the city that never sleeps, New York, NY. Having grown up in Bakersfield all my life, New York was a very different world. It was the best vacation I have ever been on; I completely fell in love with the city. My parents and I ventured across the country in 2007 as my early graduation present. We stayed at a nice, small hotel. If you walked three blocks to the right of the hotel you were in Time Square and if you walked a few blocks to the left you were at Rockefella Center. The hotel was also not far from the theater district and we took full advantage of it. We saw Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and Spamalot; it’s hard to say which was my favorite. Later that week we spent the day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I loved seeing all the classic and modern pieces together in one place. Another thing I loved in New York was the food; they really do have the best pizza in the states. We also visited Dylan’s Candy Bar, which is basically a huge candy store for kids of all ages. We originally thought we were not going to be able to see the Statue of Liberty but on the last day we managed to do it. We did not actually take a boat out to the island but we did get to see it.
ReplyDeleteLauren,
DeleteGoing to New York sounds amazing! It sounds like you had a blast. I have always been curious and hope to one day get to visit the city that never sleeps. I wouldn't like to live there because I truly love my sleep and Bakersfield, but I do hope to one day be able to just go visit; just go sight-seeing and eat a slice of the best pizza in the states.
Going to New York is something that i hope i get to do in the future i imagine that there are people everywhere at all times. Once i am there i am going to have to try the pizza to see what the big deal is about.
DeleteHow awesome!! I have always wanted to go to New York, NY. I have some friends who recently went and they have said nothing but good stuff about NY. I hope to some day go.
DeleteThis sounds like an amazing trip and you really got to see what New York is all about! Not only did you get to do one thing, but it sounds like you got to do quite a lot in your visit! I would love to go there someday and now your post makes me want to even more! It sounds like such a cool environment too be in!
DeleteI agree Lauren, New York is amazing and also my favorite place that I have been.
DeleteI'm so jealous! I have always wanted to go to New York and explore. I am dying to go to a Broadway play. It sounds like you had an awesome time.
DeleteNew York sound like a great place to visit. I have always imagined traveling there. I can imagine all the skyscrapers would be amazing.
DeleteThe farthest place I had the opportunity to travel to is Jacksonville, Florida. My husband, my daughter, my son, and I went to Florida to visit my husband's oldest brother. In the summer of 2006 my family and I flew out of LAX and had a layover in Dallas before landing in Jacksonville. It was the first for my kids and I to fly in an airplane therefore the excitement was intense. As we arrived in Florida, the weather was very humid, muggy and hot. Nevertheless, the visit with my brother in law was pleasant because his plans during our visit included tubbing in the river, and visiting the beach. During our visit in Florida we had time to take our kids to Orlando and visit Disney World. The experience was fun. Our kids had so much fun at Disney world, that they thought for the longest time that we actually took them around the world in the two days we visited Disney world. We all enjoyed the little mini world that Disney created in their park. The learning experience was fun filled with enjoying the different foods, language, and clothing from the other cultures. Traveling to a different place was definitely a change for us to see the differences from back home. The roads were also different from home, they had multiple tolls while we traveled through the highways in Florida. It was the first time that we ever had to pay to drive on the highway. The trip was a learning experience for the whole family and we all enjoyed our visit to Florida.
ReplyDeleteClaudia,
DeleteWow must have been exciting but scary to have gotten on a plane for the first time. I yet have not been on an airplane and will admit I fear being on one.
The farthest I have ever been from home would be when I went to Washington D.C. on a school trip. During my junior year of high school I was part of an organization that had a national convention once a year and I had the opportunity to attend. My parents wanted me to go because it was a great opportunity and not everyone gets the chance to see the nations capital. Like I said in my first post I saw many of the famous landmarks such as the Capital Building, The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, and of the course The White House just to name a few. I also got to take a tour of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and see how money is made. I got to take a tour of the Capital Building and the Washington Monument, which are both very interesting to see. During my trip I also visited the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Arlington Cemetery which are places that are moving and make you think. That was an experience I will never forget and hope to visit again.
ReplyDeleteBeing able to visit the Arlington Cemetery must of been so nice to see the graves of all of the heroes that have laid down there life's for the freedom of our country.
DeleteThe farthest I have traveled from home would have to be Bangladesh, but that is like another home so I would consider Singapore for my farthest travel destination. We were there only for two days, but I was intrigued by the city ambiance. After 18 hours of flight, we landed there middle of the night, and the city was somewhat sleeping but the hotel guests were not. It was a four star hotel, but people were talking in the hallway in a very relaxed way. It was a new and different city to us so we didn’t make a big deal out of the situation and fell asleep. The next day we had a very good breakfast at the hotel and started to take a tour of the city by walking. Whenever we take trips we try our best to avoid driving and try to walk as much as possible, and there are two reasons behind it; one would have to be that I believe only by walking a city could be properly explored and secondly we can indulge a little and not return home with myriad of guilt. While we were walking we felt the humidity and were sweating profusely, but somehow the city was so relaxed that a little sweat didn’t become a barrier to our day of exploration. Everywhere we turned we saw families walking together, shopping, or eating. We also did little bit of shopping of our own, and tried some new foods from the street vendors. By the end of the day we realized that we walked for about eight hours, but because of the city ambiance, rich culture, and good food we were able to lock that only one day in Singapore in our memory for the rest of our lives.
ReplyDeleteThe farthest I have been from home been my parent’s home town near Guadalajara Mexico. It is a two hour car drive from my home town to Los Angeles, followed by a three hour flight to Guadalajara. After we arrive in Guadalajara Mexico it is another two hour cab ride to a small ranch in the middle of nowhere. The trip is so interesting; it blows my mind how in just a few hours I can be in a completely different country with a different language and different customs. In Los Angeles I see tall buildings and fancy cars but just a few hour later all I see is little brick houses with very old cars parked outside. When I am in L.A.X., I see people from different parts of the world. Most of us have the same thing in common; we are there to visit a different part of the world that takes away from our day to day life. The best thing about traveling is the different foods you can taste, and believe me the majority are 100 times better than a McDonald Big Mac. Besides traveling to Mexico the only other place that I have been to that is far away from home would be Las Vegas, and it is truly Disneyland for grownups. All of the lights and night life is so refreshing especially if you come from a small town like me. These are the only two places that I consider to be far from home that I have been to, but I plan to make this list a lot longer and get out there and see the world.
ReplyDeleteHow neat, I've been to Guadalajara Mexico. It is very beautiful. My family only lives two hours away from there.
DeleteYou are right, it is extremely amazing how in a matter of hours we can be with the ones we love.
DeleteThe farthest I've ever been from home is South and North Carolina. I went when I was 18 to Parris Island, SC for Marine Corps basic training, then came home for a month, then left to Camp Geiger, NC for Marine Combat Training. Other than that, I've been in California or Kentucky (with family). My trips away from home weren't leisurely trips, so I didn't get to go out to eat or go to any bars or anything, it was strictly work related.
ReplyDeleteThe farthest I've been from home on a vacation type trip, was to Houston, Texas. I went to Houston a few years ago and the people there were so nice. I went to a bar and drank too much, somehow, I made it outside where some nice Texans held my hair while I threw up in the bushes. Then they offered to go find my friends to let them know where I was. I have not experienced kind people like that in Southern California, yet. The food was great, I'm biased because I love cheeseburgers. I did some sight seeing and walked around the woodland areas and enjoyed the 27 degree winter weather. It was amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe farthest I have been from home is Mexico. Both my parents were born in Mexico. The majority of their family’s still live of there. So, we go visit them at least once a year. Well at least we use to, not anymore. Things in Mexico have changed drastically. From what I have heard from my cousins, Mexico is not what it use to be anymore. As a kid I would travel to both Jalpa, Zacatecas and Mexico City. My fathers side of the family lives in Jalpa, Zacatecas. From what I remember Jalpa, is a nice calm place. My fathers family have a ranch up on the mountains, filled with lots of animals. Being up there is very relaxing and peaceful. As a kid, I would prefer to go to Japla a million times over going to Mexico city. My mothers side of the family lives in Mexico city. It is a very loud, busy, scary place. What I mean by scary is that no one is safe there. Especially when out walking on the streets. I remember when we would go out, my mother would tell us to leave all our jewelry in safe place at my aunts house. This was because Mexico city has a bad reputation of thugs being out in the streets snatching whatever they feel might be valuable to them. Luckily nothing ever happened to any of my family members in the city while on vacation. The thought of always having to watch my back, was not my idea of a vacation. Which is why I preferred to go to Jalpa. It was much more peaceful.
The farthest I have ever been to is Santa Monica in California. It was my first time going to the beach and it was my husband’s first time going to a beach in California. I had a great time and my daughter loved the waves so much. I have never traveled out of the state and I have never even gone out of the United States. I hope to maybe one day first travel to El Salvador where my parents and my husband’s parents are from. I would really like to meet my in laws, but they live in El Salvador. My husband and I have plans of traveling the world when we’re older and after going to El Salvador would like to try to go to Italy. I’ve already started to learn some of the language so that when we go we don’t get confused with all the signs there. I want my daughters to get to know other countries and cultures, so traveling could be good for us.
ReplyDeleteSanta Monica is a great place. I especially enjoyed the pier with all the rides and then Venice is a short walk to the south. Santa Monica and Venice are both great beaches and the performers are great to.
DeleteThe farthest we have ever been from home was when as children me and my brother used to travel with my Dad to Mexico. Every couple of years we would go on a trip to Michoacan, Mexico with my Dad to visit our aunts cousins and other relatives. These trips were great because we would fly or my Dad would drive. I don't quite remember how long the flights would be, but for sure they were between four hours and 8 hours, depending on how many stops we made along the way. The drive would take three days, and they were awesome. I liked the flights because they were quick; however, the drives were cool because of all the sights along the way, not to mention the food. These were my favorite experiences as a child. I could remember how excited everyone was to see us, and we were just as excited. It was also humbling to see how poor a lot of people were. There were always parties and weddings that we were always invited to. I became quite the ladies man acquiring a few crushes. When it was time to leave for home I would feel heart broken. I haven't visited in over 18 years and it doesn't look like I will be visiting any time soon. I still see my aunts and cousins when they come to the US to visit every once in a blue moon, but going there as a kid was a great experience. Going back will be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI have been able to travel quite a few places in my young life. I went on a Washington D.C. trip in 7th grade. I got to see all of the famous monuments, the white house and even a replica of the Mayflower. My freshman year of college I took a trip to Aspen, Colorado with the snowboarding club. It was a bus trip so we got to see Utah and Nevada along the way. I also have been to Mexico twice. But the furthest away from home that I have traveled to is Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter’s grandparents lived in Hawaii for 7 years. I was lucky enough to live with them for 3 months while my boyfriend was in military training there. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly different than what I expected. Although beautiful it was very touristy and crowded. Main cities and beaches were highly populated and reminded me of Santa Monica. But I was lucky to be staying with people that knew about all the secret spots. We took hikes on the weekends; scuba dived and went to the hidden beaches after to cool off. I was able to live with the locals and experience their culture. It is actually a much divided state; people of Hawaiian decent do not approve the military and the military families there. The call them haoles, which is a derogatory word for white people. It is so bad that most military families put there children in private schools that are catered to these type of families. Hawaiian culture is also very different that what I was use to. The do not take academics seriously and live a care free life of surfing, barbequing and partying, which is what you probably expect of people that live in such a beautiful place. But the schools were failing miserable to keep attendance up and it was a problem I saw regularly on the news there. I was lucky enough to visit the Marine Corps base and the Navy base which is where the Pearl Harbor attacks took place. There are still bullets in the building and sidewalks. I also got to take a tour of the Pearl Harbor Memorial, which was very moving. I would encourage everyone to visit if ever in Hawaii. Although I enjoyed the trip, I missed the mainland immensely. I would go to Hawaii again, but I would like to go to the Big Island which I hear is beautiful and not as touristy.
The farthest I have ever been from home would have been when I was in Italy. I had just finished studying for the summer in France and I was really lucky to have met a couple kids from Arkansas who were studying at the same university. After the summer, we all became pretty close and they invited me to go to Italy and Spain with them. So I decided to take them up on that offer and was lucky enough to visit Rome, Florence, and Venice. I loved Rome for it's historical value, otherwise I fell in love with Florence. It was a beautiful city that had plenty to offer. It was because of this city that it made me want to start studying a little bit of Italian just in case I magically ended up there instead!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so amazing! I would love to go to Italy and experience all it has to offer! I think it is so cool that you got to study over there and then get to go to Spain as well, along with Rome, Florence and Venice! I would love to experience the culture and all the history they have to there. I am sure that is something you will always cherish!
DeleteThe farthest that I’ve traveled has been to Vancouver, Canada to visit my uncle, aunt and cousin for the very first time. At the time, they did not have their cards to come to the United States. When I was sixteen years old, my father and I took a trip to Seattle, Washington to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins. Beforehand, my father told me that during this trip, I would be meeting his brother, my uncle and his family, for the very first time in my life. Upon hearing this news, I was excited and eager to meet them and I had never been to Canada before. After visiting family in Seattle for a few days, we drove up to Canada and crossed the border. Of course, I had no phone service but I took a lot of pictures during my visit. When I met my uncle and his family I was overwhelmed with happiness and I wanted to know everything about him. I had so many questions because this was a person that I had never met before. My father, aunt, uncle and my grandparents along with my cousins and my uncle’s wife and me went to the Butchart Gardens, one of Vancouver’s main attractions. There was a variety of brightly colored flowers and plants that I had never witnessed before. It was such an amazing experience to cherish that with my family whom I really don’t see that often. The experience taught me the value of family and how important it is to keep in touch no matter how far away they might be.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to Canada, but I would like to go. I have been up to Humbolt County which gets closer to the borders of Canada. If Canada is half as beautiful as the drive up north then I am missing out! My friend's sister lives in Canada and the pictures from there seem so lovely. I enjoyed reading your post. It is nice to keep in touch with family no matter how far they are.
DeleteThe farthest I have traveled from home was to Puebla Mexico about 8 years ago. It was the first time I was visiting Mexico in 7 years and I was really excited for the trip. Visiting my family again after so many years was something that I really enjoyed. Another aspect of this trip that I really enjoyed was trying all the different foods that are not available in my hometown. Also, enjoying all the outdoors celebrations that take place during this time of year. Everyone comes together as a big family and celebrate Christmas Eve and New Years Eve together. Our family enjoys to spend time together celebrating and bonding, as well as traveling to nearby cities to enjoy a evening out. Making this trip so far away from home was very adventurous and quality time with my loved ones.
ReplyDeleteJeorgina, trying different foods is also one of my favorite experiences on vacation.
DeleteThe farthest I have ever been, which is not that far, is Colorado Springs, Colorado. Part of my mom's side of the family lives there and has for quite a while, her brother and his wife, his ex-wife (my aunt) and all there kids. We usually would go visit around Thanksgiving time and it would always be so fun! It would be snowing and get us in the mood for Christmas! We have been up to Pike's Peak a couple of times and that is always a blast, there is like a little carnival set up. You can ride on rides, take pictures with Santa, go to the petting zoo and other fun things. We would just always have a great time spending the holiday with my family; just laughing and enjoying one another. This Thanksgiving my mom, grandma and two brothers are going to Colorado again, but I am going to Dallas, Texas. This will now be the furthest I have ever gone and I am excited to see what is out there! My boyfriend is from Dallas and that is where he is at now, so I am excited to experience southern culture and I have heard Dallas is beautiful. I am also going to see if I love it enough to move out there to start working on my Master's degree. And hopefully in the future I will be able to travel all over the US and internationally too experience different styles of living!
ReplyDeleteHow fun Erika! I went to Colorado about a year ago and it was so beautiful. I would love to go again. I enjoyed reading your post! It sounds like you have some exciting plans for the holidays! Wish you safe and happy travels!
DeleteWow! Sounds Like a great place to visit. I bet it is beautiful during Christmas!
DeleteSnow! I love and miss the snow so much, it helps me get into the holiday spirt as well. I have only been to Colorado once and it was very pretty. We even saw a deer on the side of the road.

ReplyDeleteThe furthest place that I have traveled is to New York City. My brother Dane and his girlfriend Tina moved there from California about 5 years ago. It was mid July, when my friend Andria and I had the idea that we should go visit Dane for her 21st birthday. We immediately booked our flight, and were lucky enough to get a great deal with Virgin Airline. I called Dane and made accommodations, and before we knew it we were ready to head to New York. My Mother drove us to LAX, and from there we took a direct flight to JFK Airport. When we arrived it was raining, and the air felt fresh and inviting. The first night we hit the town, and went dancing at an awesome club that was themed during prohibition era. The following day we visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We loved the museum, and had the opportunity to see very interesting exhibits. Another highlight of our trip was going to China Town and tasting all of the delicious food and beverages. The overall experience was amazing, and I am still looking forward to my next visit.
I remember visiting New York City right after I graduated from high school. I enjoyed seeing the sights of New York, especially Central Park. I love that is is an oasis in the middle of a big city. I would really like to go back now that I am older and can really appreciate so many other things New York City has to offer. Your trip sounds like fun!
DeleteThe farthest I have been from home is Colorado. It is definitely not that far compared to some people, but for me it was far. I was a little nervous driving. The only thing that makes me nervous is breaking down and being stranded. Thankfully that never happened, but the adventure of getting lost happened a few times. I found it exciting to see new things and be out of the norm of California’s weather and sights. It was so breath taking to experience the beautiful scenery and weather when traveling through Utah and Colorado during the fall season. On this road trip with my boyfriend, we drove through Las Vegas, then through Utah and then in to Colorado. The sight of the mountains when driving through Nevada and Utah were awesome. We drove through the Red Rock Canyon. It was so beautiful that we had to drive up to a view point to take a break and look at the endless scenery around us. It was such a beautiful moment. We then traveled into Colorado where it started to get green. Because it was during the fall months, it had started to snow. We stayed in Georgetown Colorado. Georgetown is a small town in Colorado that has probably about a little more than a thousand residents, but the beauty and charm of the town is so intriguing. It was such a great time and a great experience. What I found a little odd during that trip were the people who seemed to constantly stare at us. I think they just recognized that we were from out of town. I kept thinking to myself that we look pretty “normal.” It was such a great time that I will never forget about.
ReplyDeleteHello, your post definitely caught my attention because you have been to Colorado. I have absolutely no family in Colorado; however, my mom promises that she is going to retire there. I support anything my mom wants, but now that I hear about its uniqueness I think I would like her to move, so I can have an excuse to visit.
DeleteThe farthest I have been from home would have to be moving to California. I was so upset to leave my home in North Carolina because that was all I knew. This move wasn’t my Idea, nor did I have any choice in it. I felt like I was being ripped from everything I knew. I wish it was the ideal trip away from home. Instead I had to uproot my whole life in the middle of a school year and move 2,599 miles away. My adopted mom’s mother had gotten sick so my adopted mom decided to move back to California and take care of her. I wish I was excited to take this trip, but I certainly was not. It wasn’t anything against my adopted mom’s mother, but I just didn’t want to be that far away from my biological mother and not know how to get back to her. I was ten years old then. I cannot wait to return to North Carolina; which I plan on doing come June 2013 after I graduate. I do plan to continue on traveling and exploring parts of the world that I can. This time it will be my choice, instead of it being forced on me.
ReplyDeleteThe furthest I have been from home was to the Caribbean on a cruise. My grandparents took me to Disney World and on a cruise to the Caribbean as a graduation present. I had never been to Disney World or to the Caribbean so I was very excited. We took a flight from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Orlando, Florida and went straight to the Polynesian Resort at Disney World to settle in. We had a wonderful two days at Disney World and California Adventure. I had been to Disneyland when I was little and I figured it would be very similar. It turned out to be so much better than I expected, it was Disneyworld times two! After our Disney World adventure was over we jumped on a van that took us to Fort Lauderdale, where we boarded the Monarch of the Seas.
ReplyDeleteThe cruise ship was unlike anything I have ever seen before. Every inch of the cruise ship was beyond beautiful. There was an unlimited supply of free food, a huge shopping mall, a spa and the list could go on and on. There were four ports of call during the 7 day cruise. We stopped in the Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Haiti and a private island owned by Royal Caribbean. We walked up a waterfall in Jamaica, did some shopping in the Grand Cayman, got on jet skis and swam with dolphins. I am very thankful that my grandparents took the time out of running their restaurant to take me on the most memorable vacation of my life. I loved that experience so much I hope my fiane and I would do something similar for our honeymoon. Later in life I would love to take my family to Disney World and on a cruise, when my kids are old enough to remember it.
This trip sounds amazing! I have always wanted to visit the Caribbean. I have seen pictures and been in tropical places but I have always wanted to see this place in particular. I really enjoyed reading about this trip and hope to one day take a similar one.
DeleteThe furthest i have ever been from home was when my wife and I went on our honeymoon to Bora Bora. It was the greatest place i have ever been. It was so different from the world that i am use to. We had a wonderful time staying in our bungalow that was out over the water. Throughout the day we could see sharks and manta rays swimming right underneath our bungalow, and throughout the hotel. The flight there was so long i had no idea what to do with myself. It was an eight hour trip to the main island, and then another hour and a half trip to Bora Bora. Sitting in a chair for that long with people all around you is the most uncomfortable thing in the world. By the time we got their i just didn't want to fly back because it was so uncomfortable. The trip was absolutely amazing, and I am so glad that we went there for our honeymoon.
ReplyDeleteThe furthest I have been from home is the east coast of the United States. I have traveled to Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire (almost all in one day). It amazes me how close the states are there. I distinctly remember starting the day in Massachusetts, having lunch in New Hampshire, and ending the day in Connecticut. Although I have not gone out of the country on my furthest excursion, the east coast is so different compared to California. For starters, you can drive 8 hours and still be in California (if you are driving north or south). Even still it takes three to four hours to get to a state to the east of California. Secondly, the weather is completely different as if it could be another country. I actually have the ability to go visit the east coast in a couple weeks and cannot wait to see the trees full of fall color; red, brown, yellow, and orange leaves fill the surroundings.
ReplyDeleteHello Abby, your post is so interesting. You are truly lucky to have had such an adventure. The one thing that I always look forward to in Fall is seeing the leaves change colors. Where are you going in the east coast?
DeleteI am going to Massachusetts specifically. My grandparents live there so some of my family are going to spend some times with them. Since I have several online classes I won't be missing out on school!
DeleteThe farthest I've ever been from home is when I traveled to the deep South: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia this past summer. I have been to North Carolina twice before this last trip. My aunt, uncle, and three baby cousins live in Highpoint, North Carolina. My mom and I love that we have the option to get away from the boys in our family, which is much need some times, and take a girls' trip to the South. We usually team up with my two other aunts and my three other girl cousins. We are all a really close group so we end up having a blast each time we travel together. A couple summers ago, we rented a big, yellow beach house on Oak Island in North Carolina. It was fabulous. Each time we've gone to the South we've tried to throw in a little educational activity. In the past, we visited Old Winston-Salem and learned about the people who lived there and took a tour of some old houses and shops. This last summer I got to travel around Old Savannah in Georgia and learned about some of the historic landmarks that are still there today. I love going to the South and being able to absorb all of the different things that take place there. The culture is so unique and totally different than ours. Even the little things like the food, the music, and of course the accents differ from ours on the west coast. Every time I come back home, I bring some new information about the Southern states with me.
ReplyDeleteThe farthest I have traveled away from home was to Washington D.C. It was an unforgettable experience. At the time, I was an eighth grader who was chosen to participate in Close Up. Approximately 4 months before our departure date we started fundraising. During this time I would sell to family members and friends; however, I was not too excited. I remember the exact time where I finally realized that I was going to Washington D.C. Four of us students were inside the bus opening a bag our teacher had given us. Inside were cameras along with this letter informing us of all tourist places. As I started reading the letter, I could feel my heart start beating faster. This trip was a lot fun because we stayed in a hotel, went sight seeing, and were treated like adults. Also, I met many other students from around the world. If my son ever is offered to join the program, I would not hesitate in saying yes!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have been chosen for that program. I wish that I had been chosen when I was in middle school too, but unfortunately I was not. I'm glad that you had fun in the end.
DeleteThe farthest that I have ever traveled from home was Rochester, New York. When I was 15 (about to be 16 within a week), I went on a trip to the University of Rochester in the state of New York for a week during the summer. When I was sophomore in high school, I had signed up for a program called the National Hispanic Institute. Thanks to that program, I was given the opportunity to visit the University of Rochester. About ten of us went on this trip and our stay was very educational. We learned about how governments work and had our own mock government within the university. I got to meet people from Texas, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York. I also got to meet people that were of other Latino cultures that were not Mexican. Within our little government, we all had the opportunity to run for president, vice president, supreme court justices, and senators. The rest of the people who did not want to run or did not win a position, were part of the House of Representatives. I am honored to say that I ran for Senator and I won. After the elections we would go into a room everyday and make up our own laws. The mock government was very realistic and I actually felt like I was a real Senator. The only thing I do not miss was the food; it was not good at all. The week that we were chosen to attend this event, was the week of my birthday. I got lucky that the day of my birthday was the day that the institute people had chosen to take us to Niagara Falls. I spent my 16th birthday at Niagara Falls and ate at the Hard Rock Café. I would love to go to Niagara Falls again someday.
